If you’re a regular visitor to the , you can’t have failed to notice the march of the solar panel, spreading its way across the land.
Although generally accepted as positive due to the clean they produce, communities that have to live alongside farms don’t always see them in that light.
This is one reason why public consultation is such an integral part of the planning process. They enable the development team to articulate the benefits of such schemes, and allay people’s fears as far as they can.
Ensuring local communities are heard also helps to engender a level of trust in the developer, even if people don't always agree with what is being proposed.
We recently worked with developer GAMCAP to deliver an extensive plan in the pre-planning phase of a solar farm in Holderness, East Yorkshire. The strategy included:
🗺️ Stakeholder mapping and engagement
🔑 Refining key messaging
📢 Identifying communications challenges and how to manage them
💻 Project website
🧑🤝🧑 Public consultation
📝 Media relations work
👀 Social media monitoring
🖨️ Design and print for public consultations
The strategy ensured all relevant stakeholders understood the scope of the development, why it was necessary, and why the specific site had been chosen. This ensured the majority accepted the scheme, if even they retained some concerns.
