βš“ NMA APPRECIATION PRESENTATION βš“

Each year NMA delivers a busy programme of events reflecting on events and personalities related to our Maritime past and 2025 was no exception.

We are very fortunate to be supported in our endeavours by a cohort of people with a myriad of diverse skills and expertise who offer their help in a voluntary capacity. Our contributors will vary depending on whatever projects we are engaged in and we host a presentation event annually as a token of our appreciation.

We held our event on Wednesday 21st January in the Heritage Section of Newry City Library courtesy of the Heritage Officer, Mr Chris Cassidy. Our latest model ships, Pine, Portadown and Ulidia, were on display along with a new information pop up commissioned from Michael Mc Caul Signs. We were pleased to welcome Newry native , John Mc Aleavey with his wife, Anne. John made and donated these bespoke models of Fisher fleet ships. We also welcomed Mr Dick Mc Connell to make the presentation to John.

Presentations were also made to,
Thomas Braham and the Braham Group, Corporate Members and sponsors of our Bishop Crawford event in Warrenpoint in August.
Maud Hamill, a luminary with the Ulster History Circle who undertakes detailed research and photography.
Liz Boyle, a doyen of the media who is always on hand for press coverage.
Kerri Morrow, Community Engagement and Development manager with NMDDC, who is always on hand with directions and guidance.
Kathy Mc Caughey and the Choir Studio whose musical contributions greatly enhanced our tribute events for Fr Norbert Barry OP. And Archbishop Francis Carroll SMA. Both of these men came from families with strong links to the Port.
Chris Cassidy from Libraries NI who supports projects with detailed research.

Three of our recipients were unable to attend on the day.
Captain Sean Cunningham, Greencasle. Logistical support on Carlingford Lough.
Bill John Kelly and family. Corporate Member and availability of the George Cross awarded to his brother, Raymond.
Brendan Hardy and Posh Pig Warrenpoint for provision of hospitality post Bishop Crawford event.

We also wish to thank all our Corporate Members for their ongoing help and support. Without the aid of these businesses we could not deliver our annual schedule of events.

Our busy schedule of events across 2025 concluded today in the heritage section of Newry City Library.
NMA hosted hospitality for John and Anne Mc Aleavey, residents of Lisburn, to mark the handover of ships models made by John to our Association.

The ships in question are, "SS Portadown", "SS Ulidia" and "SS Pine" , all members of the fleet of Joseph Fisher & Sons and based in the Albert Basin.

"SS Ulidia", built in 1903, is the only ship in the fleet that never docked in Newry. At 5000 tons, dw she was built for foreign trade and Fishers never repeated this exercise, selling the ship in 1916. "SS Portadown" and "SS Pine" were mostly deployed in the coal trade between Britain and Ireland.

John Mc Aleavey is a native of Cecil Street, Newry but like so many, he emigrated to England when he was 16. Crafting ships models became a passion starting with "SS Walnut" in 1970 and over the years he has built more than 25 bespoke and detailed models. His collection reflects examples of various genres from fishing to sailing and steam to diesel.

He has now decided to disperse his portfolio and we were privileged to be gifted with these 3 fine specimens from the Fisher fleet. The models are an obvious labour of love.... the detail is unreal. NMA commissioned Michael Mc Caul Signs to fabricate display cases to ensure the security of the models and they too did an excellent job. NMA have given the models to Libraries NI and they will now be on permanent display in Newry Library.

John and Ann were joined by family and friends for the handover when James Mc Arevey thanked John for his generosity and efforts to preserve our rich vein of maritime heritage. Call to Newry Library and view this showcase of the talents of John Mc Aleavey.

Thank you, John.
