🟢 Monday’s Report 🟢
🔥🐂🔥🐑🔥🐂🔥🐑🔥🐂🔥
Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their ‘Big Bank Holiday’ show and sale of Store Cattle in conjunction with their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock on Monday 30th August 2021. Forward were 311 Cattle and 1578 Sheep.

58 Cast Cows & OTM sold to 196ppk or £1667
94 Store Steers sold to £1610
146 Store Heifers sold to £1355
7 Young Bulls sold to £1440
6 Breeding Cattle sold to £1300
1477 Store Lambs sold to £110
101 Feeding Ewes sold to £106

Show Cattle – Thanks go to Mr R Mitchell for travelling down from Howlett Hall, Morpeth and impeccably carrying out the judging duties at our Bank Holiday pre-sale show of store beast. For today at least the suggestion that Blonde’s have more fun became reality as a superb British Blonde steer scooped the championship; a perfectly presented 17 month old full of scope and style from Lucyland Blondes, Newton Aycliffe proved to be judges choice. A smart British Blue heifer from R L Carter, Woodlands picked up the heifer class red rosette and also the reserve championship, she certainly looks to be a quality butchers beast of the future.

Store Cattle – Away from the show cattle the exceptional store trade continued in terrific form, 15 hefty Charolais steers from J H Johnson, White Lea Farm, Roddymoor set the ring alight when they all sold beyond £1500, peaked at £1610 and averaged £1572. Top priced heifer at £1355 came from a fabulous run shown by N K Forshaw who made the worthwhile trip across the Pennines from Bolton Fold Farm, Longridge; 68 super cattle from the welcome Western visitors levelled up across the board at a very pleasing £1070. Of the yearling cattle a marvellous run from F Ward, Rogerley Hall, Frosterley stood out as the high quality run of 21 Limousin calves saw heifers peak at £1235, steers to £1250 and the packet average a more than healthy £1136.

Cast Cattle – Another superb trade, a sale average of 142 pence was more than pleasing given that many of the visitors today were certainly in the OAP category. Top price was a mere 11 years old as the sprightly British Blue cross from A E Iceton & Son, High Birk Hatt, Baldersdale sold for a terrific 196 pence per kilo and £1667. Black and white cows this week peaked at £1212 from Little Newsham Farms and a splendid 186 pence per kilo from one of the rare youngsters over the bridge this week consigned by Stainton Hill Farms, Streatlam. The native breeds were again forward in plentiful proportion with the Aberdeen Angus breed leading the charge selling as high as 176ppk or £1412.

Store Lambs – A magical trade once again, buyers for all classes resulted in a host of happy vendors. With 22 pens selling at £100 or more the race for the top slot was a close one, winning by a whisker were 9 superb Texel lambs from S J Love, Low Doctor Pasture when the hammer fell they sold for £109 per head. Running lambs as always look the dearest as hill lambs seemed to take a lift, Cheviots today seeing the breed average £69, Scotch Blackface averaged £64 and Swaledale’s £55. No better point of reference to judge the trade than Darlington regulars A & B Herworth of Crake Scar Farm, Hamsterley who’s 1st draw of tremendous Suffolk lambs out of Mule ewes today saw the 100 of them average £99.84. The Herworth 1st draw on the same week last year averaged £19 less than today and unimaginably traded £37 less in the disastrous spell at this time during the 2019 campaign.
