Take your most everyday business document.

A document you might use every week or one you might share with clients all the time.

One that gets a lot of mileage, but not a lot of design love.

What is it?

(Whisper it in your head.)

Maybe your T&Cs?

Maybe your business services and prices?

Maybe it's your presentation template?

Whatever it is, what if it was transformed overnight?

Transformed into a document that:

✨ Echoes your credibility and professionalism

✨ Celebrates and reflects your business

✨ You get excited to share with others

You don't need a rebrand to do this.

I can readily use your existing brand to create something magical.

How would it impact you and your business?

I'm sorry, I can't share.

Sometimes with my work, I can't always share it here.

Not that I'm a spy (or maybe I am).

But because of a few reasons:

πŸ’Ό I work with marketing agencies (keeps my foot in the door with what's going on in industry).

Due to legal and contractual obligations, it is not my place to share.

🏷️ I partner on a white label basis for marketers, web developers, fellow graphic designers, and more.

I respect it's their work and clients. I may ask permission to share from time to time, but ultimately it's their baby.

🀐 Whilst my own client projects enable me to promote the work, I respect some client requests for confidentiality.

This might be because of contracts they have in place with other organisations, or it might be the work is part of a bigger strategy that can't be promoted yet.

πŸ“‘ And sometimes, it's just not on my radar.

I love what I do. Working hard to deliver my clients' work on-schedule and on-budget is what drives me everyday.

So, when it gets to the end of the day, I feel satisfied, I don't often think about posting.

It's more, what am I having for dinner?

*I can share food, but under pre-agreed parameters.

Another way to say I'm a designer without saying I'm a designer?

I use InDesign to support my DIY.

I love doing work on my home.

It's an extension of the designer in me.

How can I best utilise the space I have to create a certain vibe? (I love the Scandi/hygge style.)

Anyway, as much as possible, I try to do my own DIY.

But there's a lot of maths when it comes to putting up multiple frames.

2️⃣ Quantity of frames
πŸ“ Width and height of frames
⬆️ Height from ceiling for perfect eye level (not for our cats though - sorry! πŸˆβ€β¬›πŸˆ)
↔️ Positioned centre to the wall
➑️ Width between frames
↕️ Length from top of frame to frame hook
πŸ”„ Width between both hooks

All "just" to place two nails.

Fortunately, in the design world, this is my jam.

I'm an a**l designer.

Using X, Y, width, and height in InDesign is my best friend every time I design.

So, why would I leave it just to design?

In the background of this photo is my desk.

But what can't be seen from the photo is an InDesign document open, showing just this.

Document set up to the exact wall dimensions, with both frames in position.

Therefore, giving me the exact coordinates for the two nails.

So satisfying.

How to say I'm a designer without saying I'm a designer?

Some clients ask for just a logo.

Disclaimer: I totally understand why some clients will ask for this.

It's a tough world out there and with all that life/the world can throw at a business owner, we have to prioritise.

But here's the thing, your brand is more than your logo.

And your brand can serve you so much better when there's a strategy in place.

Better yet, life gets a little easier when you keep consistent and simply align your everyday to your brand.

How?

πŸ“ Unique brand strategy:
Your brand strategy is created based purely on you and your unique mission, values and position.

From what work you do, to the clients you support, to how your business fits into your life. Your brand strategy defines it.

You can cut out all the other noise in the world.

πŸ“’ Consistent visual brand identity:
Your website, social media, business card, to name but a few are an extension of you.

When a visual brand identity is done well, it not only gives you the professionalism and credibility you deserve, it actually reflects your unique persona.

Brand guidelines can just include your logo, fonts and colours, and this is a good starting point.

But what if your brand guidelines also indicated exactly how you execute any communications going forward.

Simple, consistent brand, inside and out.

Check out my selection of client examples that show the difference between:

Just a logo vs. fully formed visual brand identity.

We co-create.

This is what Fahimah Adam (Director of No7 Legal) calls our partnership together.

And she's so right.

No good partnership works when it's one-sided.

In the past, some clients initially gave me carte blanche with projects and whilst I love the faith and confidence they have in me, it just doesn't work.

Without that critical insight you've built up in your business, your clients, and your industry, we're on the back foot already.

And vice versa.

The best partnerships are when:

🌱 We work together

πŸ€” We ask questions (there are no silly questions, the more, the merrier)

πŸ’¬ We share openly

The more we confide in one another, the more we can define the problem and refine the solution.

We're working towards the same shared goal.

Fahimah and I have recently been working together on her guide template.

And I'm so excited for the world to see what we've been up to.

I went social-media free and now I'm in a pickle...

I took a week off recently to celebrate mine and my husband's birthdays, and decided to not go on social media.

I did so, because I wanted as little distraction from enjoying each day's adventure.

It was brilliant, I felt so present in the world.

Whilst social media can provide a valuable support system both professionally and personally, I wonder whether the majority of our experience is providing said value.

Is there a black hole where we're losing the precious time we have to doom scrolling?

The internet in general, used to feel like a tool.

We used it when required and then put it back.

Yet these days, with social media's algorithm, it's begun to demand things of us.

The 2020 film, The Social Dilemma quoted, 'if you're not paying for the product, you are the product'.

The way it's potentially rewiring our brains to chase a constant dopamine hit can only be unhealthy.

So, the pickle...

Go cold turkey?

Or is there a middle ground, and what does that look like?

Would genuinely be interested to know how others are navigating the rising challenges of social media.

It's not just kids I'm concerned about, it's all of us.

P.s. totally get the irony of writing this as a social media post, but like I say, social media has its perks.

Love full circle moments.

With some of the businesses that I regularly work with, it's reciprocated and they've started working with me.

And vice versa.

There's no expectation for it, but when it happens, it's so lovely being in trusting, skill- and value-sharing client relationships.

Matt Glover Photography is one recent brill example.

Matt Glover is a personal brand photographer (it's to him I credit my amazing brand photography).

If you met him (you’d know if you had), he has the high-vibe energy to make women-led businesses, struggling with their confidence, feel empowered in front of the camera.

And yet, Matt also brings a human-centred focus, that makes you feel seen and heard for who you are, not who you "should" be.

Matt's brand prior to us working together, consisted of a logo.

That was it.

Like many businesses, he knew his business inside out, but wanted the brand clarity and confidence to support his next stage of growth.

Now?

Matt has an in-depth understanding of his unique brand strategy, reflected into his visual brand identity. He has:

πŸ’Ž Clarity on his business' positioning and offering

πŸͺŸ A clear connection between himself and his brand

πŸ›£οΈ Direction on how to grow his business

πŸŽ‰ A visual brand identity celebrating his unique value, which can be translated across all communications

πŸ“– All wrapped up in a simple brand bible for easy, consistent everyday referencing

Matt quotes, "my brand now feels like my home."

Ah, my cup is full ✨
______

Behind the brand: Matt’s brand is focused on his human-centred approach.

Leaning into the individual energy, needs, and values of each client.

Hence, the focus symbol incorporated into his visual brand identity. And the angle on the focus is to represent Matt’s quirky personality, seeing things a little differently.

If you've not worked with a graphic designer before, there can be some silly misconceptions.

I'm here to put your mind at ease, here's 5 things graphic designers don't dislike about clients.

Trust has evolved.

I was originally going to post about how I intensely scrutinise businesses' websites and social media before I buy.

And how I can suddenly lose interest at the slightest sign of implausibility or AI.

But on reflection, it goes much deeper than how buying habits have changed.

It’s about how trust itself has changed.

A fair portion of my youth, we didn't even have the internet, trust was solely built in person.

Whereas today, we build trust both offline and online, with a lot of the heavy lifting upfront: stalking people and their businesses digitally.

Unfortunately, a lot of businesses struggle at one of these.

The solution?

Trust you are an amazing human being.

And translate your unique self online.

πŸ’‘Take a moment to audit your own brand online and offline, and see where trust can be strengthened:

1️⃣ Do I understand me and my unique brand?

2️⃣ Are my brand and I reflected well online?

3️⃣ Am I showing proof of my credibility, experience, and/or results?

Bonus question: are my online platforms technically performing and functioning as required?

The problem isn't design templates.

The problem is generic design templates.

You may not need a Graphic Designer on an ongoing basis.

But what you do need, is a consistent, professional-looking brand, that holds firm while running your business day in, day out.

Off-the-shelf design templates can be an easy-win.

They're cheap.
They're fast.

❌ But they're designed with anyone and everyone in mind.

βœ… Bespoke design templates are built around you, your brand, your clients.

The best thing is you can use them over and over again.

They look good.
They save you time.

Recently, I've created:

πŸ“– No7 Legal Services' guide template (Adobe InDesign)

πŸ“± Nicole Williams Coaching's social media template (Canva)

πŸŽ‰ Charity Link Official's 150th birthday message template (interactive PDF)

To name but a few.

Bespoke design templates give you the freedom to move fast β€” without ever looking generic.
