Have you heard that the museum re-opens on Saturday 22 May?
What's more, we are proud to present our new exhibition Crome’s Norwich: 1821-2021, which runs 22 May - 18 Sept.
This fascinating exhibition takes a fresh look at the work of the great British landscape artist, John Crome, and his relationship with his native city.
John Crome (1768 – 1821) lived and worked in Norwich all his life. The son of a weaver, he was an errand boy for a local doctor, before becoming an apprentice to a coach and sign painter where he learned to mix colours and paint. He went on to become a drawing master and was one of the principal founders of the Norwich Society of Artists. He remains one of the country’s great Romantic artists, rooting his work in the local landscape.
During the first lockdown of 2020, local photographer Nick Stone followed in Crome’s footsteps, taking advantage of the deserted city streets to pinpoint the painter’s locations and capture them as contemporary scenes. The result is an exhibition of stunning images which blend Crome’s artwork with Nick’s photographs, bringing the story of Crome’s Norwich up to date.
The museum will be open again on Sat 22 May and will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 10.00 - 16.30 until further notice.
