Not every visibility problem is something that needs fixing.

Sometimes it’s structural.

If your business relies on Google Maps for enquiries, performance is influenced by:
πŸ“ Location
⭐ Review frequency
🏒 Competitor density
βš–οΈ Market saturation

You might be optimised properly and still struggle.

Before investing more time or money, it’s worth stepping back and asking:

Is this business positioned to compete effectively in this search environment?

That requires looking at patterns β€” not just rankings.

Because chasing improvement in the wrong conditions doesn’t just cost budget.

It costs momentum.

Small changes often create the biggest improvements in Google rankings.

Most business owners think they need major website overhauls or expensive campaigns to see results. We consistently find the opposite is true.

Fresh reviews matter more than review volume
Google notices when your reviews stop coming in. We worked with a Perth retailer whose rankings dropped after they stopped asking customers for reviews. Within 6 weeks of restarting their review process, they climbed back up the local results.

Your business hours affect your visibility
Setting your Google Business Profile to 24/7 (with an answering service) can improve rankings even during traditional business hours. One of our clients saw a 15% increase in local visibility after making this change.

Title tags need regular attention
Changing one word in a title tag increased a client's click-through rate by 40%. We added 'Latest' to their service page title and traffic jumped significantly. Small words, big impact.

Simplified navigation improves everything
A local law firm had 12 menu items. We consolidated to 6 focused options. Result: 35% more traffic to their contact page and better user engagement across the site.

Strategic pop-ups work (despite the hate)
Yes, people complain about pop-ups. But when we added one offering a free local SEO checklist, our client's email signups increased 200%. Timing and value matter more than popularity.

The pattern we see: businesses often overlook these fundamentals while chasing complex strategies.

Most businesses think local SEO is about ranking in the map pack.

That was 2023.

In 2026, local SEO is about being the trusted answer everywhere people search.

Here is what changed:

AI Overviews now summarise answers before showing any businesses. Your website content feeds these summaries. If you are not in the AI answer, you might not exist.

Voice search is mainstream. People ask "Where's the nearest plumber open now?" not "plumber near me". Your Google Business Profile and FAQ content need to match how people actually talk.

Reviews matter more than ever. But not just star ratings. Google reads review content. Detailed reviews mentioning specific services and locations carry real weight.

The map pack still matters. But it is one piece of a bigger puzzle. You need to show up in AI answers, voice results, and traditional search.

Most UK businesses are still playing the old game. Stuff keywords in titles. Build thin location pages. Set up Google Business Profile once and forget it.

That approach is failing.

The businesses winning local search in 2026 understand this: you are not competing for rankings. You are competing to be the obvious choice when someone needs what you do.

That requires different thinking. Better content. Stronger reputation signals. Consistent presence across all the places people search.

The technical tricks still work. But they are table stakes now. The real competitive advantage is becoming genuinely useful to your local market.

What does your local search presence look like beyond just your website rankings?

07/01/2026

We've been running local SEO for UK businesses for nearly 15 years now.

Just reviewed the 2025 Whitespark study with 47 experts rating 187 ranking factors.

The results surprised me. Here's what actually matters in 2026:

1. Google Business Profile is still king
Not AI. Not voice search. Your GBP completeness and activity drives more local visibility than anything else. I've seen Perth cafes double foot traffic just by posting weekly updates and photos.

2. Review depth beats review volume
12 detailed reviews with photos outrank 50 generic stars. What I've learned: ask customers to mention specific services and include images. Takes more effort but the ranking boost is real.

3. Location pages work if they're actually useful
Not thin "We serve Manchester" pages. I mean proper local content with case studies and area-specific insights. One client's "SEO for Edinburgh startups" page gets more leads than their homepage.

4. Citations matter more than people think
Everyone chases backlinks. Meanwhile, consistent NAP across directories still drives serious ranking power. Boring work, but it compounds.

5. AI enhances local search, doesn't replace it
Gemini Maps and AI Overviews pull from the same local signals. Better GBP optimization actually helps you appear in AI responses.

The trade-off: this stuff takes consistent effort. No quick wins. But I've watched businesses transform their local presence by focusing on these fundamentals instead of chasing the latest hack.

Our clients still get 80% of leads from organic local search. The fundamentals haven't changed as much as the noise suggests.

πŸ” Google's AI has a new way to rank web pages...

Their latest patent details the "Information Gain" method, which helps predict what you might search for next based on your past searches.

This advancement could dramatically improve how AI search results and overviews are structured, making them more user-friendly and specific to individual needs.

The patent, titled "Contextual Estimation Of Link Information Gain," uses a ranking score to identify likely future inquiries from a user, functioning almost like a virtual assistant that knows what you're going to ask next.

This advancement could lead to more accurate searches and a better overall user experience, as it focuses more on relevant results.
