Whittlesey is a Fen town located in the north of Cambridgeshire County. In the 10th Century the landowner was predominantly the monastic estate. However, in the 16th Century the Monasteries were broken up and the land passed to private owners.

In the early 17th Century, the Duke of Bedford and some investors set about draining the fens. During the mid-17th Century, Cornelius Vermuyden, the Dutchman, oversaw the draining of the fen and had plans to widen the Nene and by the 18th Century it was estimated that 1550 acres of open field and 2400 acres of pasture were drained.

In the 20th Century the commercial brick industry thrived. 108500 tons of brick was transported via railway by 1898. In the 1970’s the road network through Whittlesey, specifically the A605, was improved with roundabouts and new sections of road.

Today, Whittlesey is expanding and we at GSH are excited for what the future hold for us and Whittlesey Town.
