Babcock inspires future engineers at Devonport Festival of Engineering

Babcock International Group (Babcock), welcomed almost 500 aspiring engineers to Market Hall in Devonport this week for its flagship Festival of Engineering, a growing national programme designed to inspire the next generation and open doors to careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Schoolchildren, teachers and local businesses from across the city took part in the two-day event, which has also been held in Bristol and Rosyth this year. Together, the three festivals have now engaged more than 1,000 pupils across the UK.

As one of the region’s largest employers, supporting more than 21,000 jobs locally, Babcock is helping tackle one of the UK’s biggest challenges, securing the future engineering skills the nation needs.

Pupils explored the world of STEM through hands-on experiences including robotics, virtual reality, coding and engineering design challenges. The interactive sessions are designed to build confidence, ignite enthusiasm and show young people that engineering is a career open to everyone, regardless of background.

The Festival forms part of Babcock’s Foundations to Future skills programme, which supports learners from primary school through to early careers while helping build a strong and diverse talent pipeline for the future. It also complements Babcock’s wider investment in regional skills development, including its leadership of the Government’s Defence Industrial Strategy skills pilot in the South West alongside industry partners.

John Gane, Managing Director of Babcock’s Devonport facility, said:

“The Festival of Engineering is all about sparking curiosity and showing young people what’s possible. Through initiatives like this, where our Babcock wide STEM engagement programme reaches an estimated one in every 130 UK schoolchildren each year, we’re helping to inspire the next generation and make a career in engineering feel accessible and achievable.

“Through our role in Team Plymouth, we’re working closely with partners across the city to turn that inspiration into opportunity supporting skills development, strengthening our talent pipeline and ensuring we have the capability needed to deliver the critical defence programmes that keep the UK secure.”
