CAMPAIGN TO RESTORE PLYMOUTH'S WEDDING CAKE

One of England's finest Victorian colonnades on Plymouth Hoe needs your support. Known locally as the Wedding Cake, this masterpiece has stood quietly, elegantly on the Hoe waterfront since 1891. You can't miss it and its historical importance to the city.

The Grade 2-listed landmark has been overlooked and ignored by the city council for years – and is now in urgent need of restoration and houses many of the city's important war memorials that also look in a dishevelled state.

The historic image of Plymouth pre-war underlines that we are so lucky it survived the Blitz of 1941, and it is very much part of our heritage.

The Belvedere Colonnades are a British treasure, and we have reached 1,200 signatures of a target figure of 1,500.

I have lived opposite the monument for the last 30 years and am proud of my family connection with the Plymouth pier – where my grandparents met and fell in love – picture courtesy of Chris Robinson's webpage.

The Wedding Cake and Pier around 1900, and the picture courtesy of Andrew Fisher, underline the historical importance of the Belvedere and its fabric to our waterfront architecture on the Hoe Waterfront.

The Victorian masterpiece is part of the city's heritage together with other Plymouth icons like Smeaton's Tower and Tinside Lido.
The Belvedere has witnessed some of the city's countless celebrations, wars, and historical events over the last 135 years.

It is also home to the beautiful memorial garden remembering the city's role in national and international campaigns.

Please sign and share the petition and let's restore this city heritage landmark for future generations to enjoy.

ALL ABOUT THE GIGAYACHT AVIVA

The Aviva super-yacht spotted at anchor inside the Plymouth breakwater this morning. The vessel is owned by British billionaire Joe Lewis and the fourth yacht of that name.

The boat is one of the most cruised gigayachts in the world and the business entrepreneur uses her as his primary residence rather than as an occasional asset it is reported.

The luxury yacht made global yachting headlines in 2017, because of a primary feature - a regulation-sized paddle/padel court built into the lower deck, fully enclosed, with stadium lighting.

The vessel was built by Abetting & Rasmussen in 2017, and stands as one of the largest yachts ever produced by the German manufacturer with an innovative steel hull.

Equipped with MTU engines, Aviva can reach a top speed of 20 knots, and a comfortable cruising speed of 14 knots. The yacht can comfortably accommodate up to 16 guests, with enough space for a crew of 25, reflecting a perfect balance between grandeur and comfort.

CAMPAIGN TO RESTORE PLYMOUTH'S FAMOUS WEDDING CAKE REACHES OVER 700 SIGNATURES

Over 700 people have now signed the petition to restore the crumbling Belvedere on Plymouth's historic waterfront - and are now on course to reach 1,000 signatures.

This timeless monument is a Grade 2 listed landmark and is affectionately known by locals as the Wedding Cake. Our petition is a national campaign to force the city council to restore the monument.

The beautiful Victorian masterpiece is part of the city's heritage together with other Plymouth icons like Smeaton's Tower and Tinside Lido.

The Plymouth Belvedere has witnessed some of the city's countless celebrations, wars, and historical events over the last 135 years. It is also home to the beautiful memorial garden remembering the city's role in national and international campaigns.

The city's crown jewel is in a sorry state and, quite frankly, is shameful—especially given the amounts of money the Labour council is spending on other projects.

The Wedding Cake might not capture the imagination of some local media outlets, or seem like a waste of money to restore by others. We had the same arguments back in 1998 when fighting to restore Tinside Lido. Look at the Art Deco lido now—a global marketing image for the city.

The Grade 2 listed Belvedere desperately deserves the same restoration and recognition. It is not just a relic, but it encapsulates the heart and soul of Plymouth and the city’s rich heritage and stands tall as a beacon of the city's resilience and waterfront beauty.

Please sign our national petition to save and restore this national landmark.

The Hoe promenade is a temporary showcase of food and drink stalls, sound stage, fairground rides, street performers and live music that started at 5pm.

It is estimated that over 100,000 spectators will watch the British Fireworks displays over two nights across the waterfront and Sound. The event is partly streamed on our LIVE 2 we**am if you are signed up. But can be viewed on other platforms including local media.

The city event is watched across the globe in partnership with the city council and the Event Services Association (TESA), since 1997.

THE LUXURIOUS AURORA ARRIVES IN PLYMOUTH

The luxurious P&O cruise ship Aurora arrived in the Sound around 6:30am this morning, and guided by the Plymouth pilot boat.

The 70,000-tonne vessel is on its first maiden visit to the city and now at anchor inside the breakwater.

Tender boats will take over a thousand passengers to Commercial Wharf on the Barbican, where they will be welcomed by cruise ship ambassadors, city representatives, and other onshore handlers.

The 13-deck ship was built in 2000 and was named by Princess Anne; it offers 19 bars and restaurants, 7 entertainment venues, and 3 swimming pools. A key feature of the ship's interiors is a 35-foot sculpture which towers over the atrium.

The cruise ship will depart late this afternoon around 5pm. You can see all the latest live movements of the ship on our we**ams throughout the day.
