It's World Book Day! Whilst this a day primarily aimed at children to enjoy the life changing benefits of reading, I wanted to give a huge shout out to all past and present clients who have taken, or are taking, their first steps into writing.

Congratulations! You are amazing - it takes great courage and a lot of self belief (which gets severely challenged during the writing process) to get to the point where you have your work in print.

Keep going 😊

I am loving working with my newest client Eximia Bathrooms Ltd and today I got to experience what sets them apart from other bathroom design companies - Virtual Reality!

Founded by the amazing Laura & Sam, they have combined Laura's creativity and Sam's installation expertise to deliver a luxury bathroom design and supply with the highest level of customer service, which is a joy to work with.

The use of VR brings the design to life and allows the customer to see exactly what their bathroom would look like and they can change different aspects of it to suit their style.

As you will hear from the video, this was my first VR experience ever and I was completely bowled over by the visuals and capabilities of the system. I could even touch the taps to make the water run! I didn't realise Laura was videoing me so what you hear is completely genuine - and really obvious that I don't get out much😂

One of the many things that has impressed me about the way Laura & Sam work is that they only take on one project at a time, which means when Sam is installing a bathroom, he doesn't get called away to finish other jobs. Really impressive in this type of trade!

Congratulations to client Arminal Dare on the publication today of her second novel 'What Price Freedom?'

It's been a pleasure as always to work with Arminal to help bring her work to print. If you love American history, the battle for equality and breaking down the barriers of prejudice, you'll enjoy this.

Available as an ebook for 99p until 3rd February: https://bit.ly/3NK7Z5V

I'm very excited to announce the publication today of my second novel, What Price Freedom?

It has been over three years in the making and I am delighted that finally it is in print! If anyone is interested in American history, especially the War for Independence, I think you will enjoy it. But it is so much more than that:

Samuel Bass is fighting for his country, for himself, for forbidden love and for African Americans held in bo***ge.

Leaving his wife and children, Samuel joins General Washington's newly formed Continental Army. Fighting at the battle of Germantown, he is badly wounded. Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens, aide-de-camp to General Washington, rescues him from death and takes him to the home of a Quaker family in nearby Philadelphia to recover. Here he falls in love with the young woman slave assigned to care for him.

Thus begins a tumultuous and, at times, dangerous journey into inner conflict, divided loyalties and a personal mission to provide equal education for everyone, regardless of their colour.

In this sweeping narrative, the author skillfully gives an imaginative portrayal of one man’s life set against the background of American War for Independence but which, at the current time of global tension, addresses issues and conflicts that still resound today, such as the struggle for power and the destructive influence of widespread racial prejudice.

You can order from any independent bookshop or online retailer. If you prefer an ebook, it is available from Amazon for 99p from today until 3rd February: https://bit.ly/3NK7Z5V

If you do buy a copy, thank you! I would love to receive your feedback 😊

I’m following an avid reader on TikTok called Richie Reads – he devours books! His genre of choice is thriller but he does venture into other genres if he likes the look of the cover and title. I am fascinated when he is showing his charity book haul (this week he had 15 books!), all of which he pretty much chose without necessarily reading the blurb on the back or knowing anything about the author. He says “I liked the look of this one” and he gets followers to let him know whether they have read it. Once he’s read the book, he’ll give an honest review but he can finish a book in a day or two and he’s not even on holiday!

This got me to thinking about the importance of a book title and it’s something that has come up in a couple of recent conversations with clients where the manuscript is finished but they have several options for titles.

Read my article for some tips when you are selecting what to call your book.

What first attracts you to a book - title, cover or blurb?

I recently joined several Facebook groups for self-published authors thinking it would give me some good insight into the challenges that writers face and confirmation that my type of support is needed in this age of do-it-yourself publishing!

Instead, it has actually made me really concerned at how many people are publishing their books without proofreading, editing, giving due consideration to cover design or thinking about how they are going to promote their book. I’ve lost count of the number of posts I’ve seen where the comments are along the lines of “I’ve published my book but no-one has bought it yet.”
It appears that they think once the book is published, people will flock to buy it with very little marketing or promotion, save for some social media posts.

The Society of Authors provide so much fantastic advice and support for writers - here's their latest post about the rise in enquiries they're receiving about AI-generated scams.

Rule of thumb - if you see a tantalising offer of publishing support on social media or via e-mail, triple check that it is legitimate. If they ask you for money up front, it is likely to be a scam.

More tips here:

The rise of AI has ushered in a whole new level of scams, about which we are receiving many enquiries.

Most authors know what genre their newly-written book falls into but what does surprise me is how many I hear about who don’t really know what other publications are out there in the same genre, let alone have read any. If you are pitching to an agent or publisher, they will expect you have a clear idea of what other books you would consider to be similar and why.

Read my latest blog for some top tips on understanding genre, how you can learn from the best sellers, and I've listed the Top 15 Self Publishing Genres.
