Having had 2 gorgeous women in the studio this week helping them find the best colours to flatter their natural beauty and radiance and also to help them put those colours together to suit their style personality too.

Brown is the new black (well this season at least), but remember, there is more than one shade of brown so choose wisely.

Chocolate brown a perfect neutral for red heads or anyone with a lot of warmth in their look.

If you are a natural blonde with a more delicate look, chocolate brown will probably be too heavy for you, so opt for a lighter shade such as cocoa.

It is still very doable for those with cooler tones too. Adjust your ‘brown’ shade to either pewter or black-brown and combine with a cooler, contrasting shade.

And finally, if you have a very contrasting look (dark hair, bright eyes), make sure you wear one of your brighter colours to lift the brown.

So, why do we use the Tonal System to analyse your colour? Here are 3 reasons:

1) Because it’s difficult to describe a person as a season (spring in the UK is very different to spring in the Gobi Desert and Japan for example).

2) It’s a flexible system (there are no square pegs and round holes over here!).

3) It’s a very modern approach. It’s not about the exact shade; we teach you how to wear colour.

There are so many shades from the beige family around right now! Of course some people can wear these better than others. Kylie Minogue wears it well, Dawn French not so well. But if you have had a colour analysis with us, you will know that we never say NO! That’s because we teach our clients how to wear colour - indeed who are we to deny anyone a shade that they really love.

Lights: lighter neutrals are easier for you to wear; team with primrose or light aqua to keep your look light and delicate.

Deeps: we give you stone and taupe in your palette, but always combine with a deeper colour such as dark navy, burgundy or true red to balance out your strong look.

Warms: many of your colours work so well with the ‘beige’ family. Try terracotta, coral and aqua for starters.

Cools: not a family of colours that you would automatically associate with your look, but you can pull off these arguably wishy-washy colours by wearing with contrasting shades that have a blue undertone, such as cassis, cornflower or purple.

Clears: your strong, contrasting look certainly needs some balance, which beige on its own won’t provide. Choose colours that will overwhelm such as emerald green, bright periwinkle and ruby.

Softs: all beiges were made for you! Enjoy wearing with sage and light periwinkle. Or combine two beiges such as stone and taupe for a tonal look.

I loved this image when it was first published by Pantone last year. They picked out Horizon Blue from the London Fashion Week, and this is a perfect way to wear it if you are a red head or have a warm and golden look.

Don’t get too hung up on colour names and even finding the exact shade. Warms look fabulous in aqua shades (it needs to have more yellow in it than blue). Wear it with stone and shades of yellow, orange or terracotta.

Let’s talk more about the aqua family tomorrow because we can find the perfect hue for anyone.

If you’ve been shopping recently, you’ve probably noticed the cropped or short trench coat. A trench can serve you well, especially as the weather starts to warm up, but you still need layers.

The cropped style is a statement piece and probably has little longevity. It can also be difficult to wear for some body shapes. A shorter trench however, can earn its place in some wardrobes, particularly if you love a casual look of jeans, t-shirt and jacket. My biggest tip would be to make sure that the length doesn’t finish at your widest point (go higher or lower). Oh and of course they come in a variety of shades, so choose your most flattering.

First trench is from John Lewis Any Day £65
Second trench is from Mint Velvet £169
