✨ Some News from Outside The Lines Marketing ✨

It’s been a little quiet over here lately, and I wanted to share an update!

I’ve recently started a full-time marketing role with a local company... an exciting new chapter in my career.

Running my freelance business has been such an empowering journey. It pushed me to back myself, do things that scared me (ie. delivering training courses to small business owners!), and create something I’m truly proud of. Most importantly, it gave me the space to fully process and embrace who I am following a diagnosis of AuDHD.

I’ve learned so much about myself and I’m thrilled to bring all that experience into this new role. Career-wise, this opportunity was too good to pass up. And, honestly, my bank account is very happy for the steady pay check too (lol).

A huge thank you to all my clients, especially those who have been with me since the beginning. Your support has meant the world. 💛

While this chapter of Outside The Lines Marketing is pausing for now, who knows what the future might hold!

Fake online reviews were on the news again this morning, and I thought it was worth a post to make small business owners aware.

It's a long one, but it's deffo worth the read! 👇

If you think being a small business owner means you won't be targeted, you are WRONG. Small and medium businesses are often vulnerable as they usually only have a few online reviews.

Which, if you only have a handful of reviews, one fake one-star rating can do real damage. Add several into the mix and you could quickly find yourself struggling to get new customers through the door.

It's more than enough to send people into panic, as their livelihood depends on the success of their business.

The scammers use this to blackmail owners. They leave several bad reviews, then ask for money to remove it or threaten to post more.

If you experience fake reviews, here’s what to do:

• Check the profile that posted it. A pattern of random one-star reviews is a red flag.
• Do not engage with anyone asking for money.
• Check your records (if you keep them) to help form your response.

Responding to the review:

Silence looks worse than no response, and the way you reply shows prospective customers how you actually handle problems.

If you have no record of them...

“We can’t find any record of you using our service. Please contact us directly at *insert email* with your details so we can address the problem.”

If you don’t keep detailed records/your business doesn't need them (cafe's/hairdressers etc)

“We’re sorry to hear this was your experience, we pride ourselves on great customer service/quality. Please get in touch at *insert email* so we can address the problem.”

Then report it through Google.

They do remove fake reviews, but it isn’t always instant.

If you’re being targeted?

Tell your community. Be transparent. Ask genuine customers to share their real experiences to help combat the scammers.

Remember:

Silence helps scammers.

Community protects businesses.

I’ve seen a lot of posts about content pillars recently, but most of them don’t really explain what they are, or how to use them... so we're going to give you the low down 👇

Content pillars aren’t a fixed list of themes you copy from someone else. They will look different depending on your industry and the type of clients you want to attract, and how often you use each category will depend on the stage of your business.

Instead of picking random topics, you choose themes that sit under four broad categories:

• education and authority,
• fun and connection,
• case studies and reviews,
• your services or offer.

The themes inside those categories are specific to your business.

For example, if you run an IT support company, your education content might cover how to spot a phishing email or why a laptop slows down over time.

Your connection content could be stories from tech issues you’ve fixed or behind the scenes of a setup, relatable memes...

Your proof would be testimonials or before-and-after clean-ups.

And your offer would simply explain your support packages or how to book help.

I see most businesses falling into one of two traps (sometimes a mix of them both!):

• constantly pushing their services
• only post “fun” content with no real strategy behind it.

For your socials to grow, it's important to understand that neither of these builds momentum on their own.

Your content pillars should create balance AND visibility.

They help you show expertise, build trust, prove results and talk about what you sell without it feeling forced.

If your content is feeling scattered or last minute, try implementing these content pillars into your social content!

SEO is not just for big companies with massive budgets.

You don’t need to become an expert. Just do these basics properly:

→ Make it painfully obvious what you do within 5 seconds
→ Add a short meta description explaining each page
→ Use one clear H1 heading per page (say what you actually do AND WHERE)
→ Add alt text to your images (describe what they are)
→ Answer the question your customer is actually typing into Google

These are your SEO basics.

Sure, there is much more you can do to make your page more visible on Google, but SEO is in it for the long haul and it does take time.

Small businesses absolutely can show up on Google, you just have to give it something useful to read!

As always, if you need any help, please do get in touch 😄

It's been an absolute honour working with Shelley over at The Hive CIC, a mental health support service for the young people in our community.

She's doing incredible things and I am so grateful to have been trusted in creating her brand pack.

Really looking forward to seeing what this year brings for The Hive Studio and working with Shelley more!

"I can’t afford marketing support… especially when ChatGPT can do it for free"

But doing your own marketing isn’t really free. The currency is just different 🤷‍♀️

You pay in energy and time that could be better spent elsewhere.

The thing is, when you start a business you don’t suddenly become a marketing expert. You’re good at what you do, of course, but marketing is a separate skill, and it’s not one most founders were trained in.

Because of this, marketing tends to gets squeezed in around everything else. Googling. Saving posts. Second-guessing decisions. Relying completely on social media...
.. and the results are mediocre. You hit a certain point and stop growing 🫠

It's not because you’re doing anything wrong. It's just not really your role!

Investing in professional marketing support can make a huge difference to your business.

Not to do MORE, but to do more of what works well, take the pressure off and give things some direction, so your business can resume growing.
