A recent website build I *loved* working on šŸ’«

Jess, the Sheffield-based artist and jewellery designer behind The Hummingbird Archives, originally came to me last year for an SEO audit and some design tweaks to her WIX site. But after learning late in 2024 that WIX is on the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) list, she made the decision to move her site to a more ethical platform.

Once Jess shared her reasons (and I read up on WIX’s controversy, including firing of Dublin employee Courtney Carey after she criticised Israel), I was 100% on board. We rebuilt her site on WordPress, updating the design to reflect her colourful creations. I’ve since made the decision to no longer work on WIX websites, except to help clients *move away* from them.

The website itself? A joy to create. Full of colour, personality, and Jess’ stunning statement jewellery and mural work.

And yes, it’s okay to choose platforms based on your values. We should do it more. We should be like Jess.

If you’ve seen my last post, you’ll know I’ve been off-grid for a bit — but I’m back on the socials train (though not full steam ahead šŸš‚).

I wanted to use my first educational-style post back to say: here are all the things I’ve *told* my clients not to do… and then did anyway šŸ‘€

Because the truth is, life happens. Work piles up. And the marketing we *know* is important often gets shoved to the bottom of the list. Which is exactly why people like me exist, to do it *for* you.

Here’s your reminder of what *not* to do (take it from someone who did exactly this):

āŒ Disappear from social media
āŒ Drop your content strategy
āŒ Avoid exploring new marketing avenues

If you’ve been doing the same, you’re not alone, but it *is* time to get back on it

It’s been a while… šŸ‘€

As is the curse of marketing professionals, the client work always comes first, and your own marketing falls by the wayside. I haven’t posted on here in over a year and a half, with *ironically* no impact on new projects or enquiries.

That’s partly because social media isn’t something I offer, people work with me for SEO and web development. And to be honest, there are far more qualified people out there doing incredible things with social media marketing. šŸ™Œ

I won’t be going back to the level of social content I used to produce, and I’ll share more about that soon. But I’m hoping to pop on here a little more often now, even if it’s just once a month.

So, what have I been up to instead of being a slave to the algorithm? šŸ‘‡

🌱 Working with fantastic eco and non-profit organisations to rebuild their websites with better green credentials, ethical principles, and SEO best practices.

šŸ“Š Helping a wide range of clients analyse and improve their sites through SEO audits, content reviews, and implementation.

⚔ Developing my web dev and digital skills to improve site speeds and reduce the carbon impact of websites.

šŸ–„ļø Offering domain management, hosting, and ethical analytics packages, all with affordability and values in mind.

šŸ½ļø Continuing to support the amazing work of as their comms coordinator.

šŸ’š Collaborating with brilliant organisations in the spaces I love most: food, sustainable fashion, ethical business, charities, and non-profits.

Happy Halloween! This marks many a happy anniversary for me, and as someone who enjoys a good old dress-up session, this couldn’t be a more fun day. On this day, I started my business, Middleton Marketing, in 2020 (photo of what I wore to my final day in the office) and in 2022, I was blessed with my beautiful daughter, the cutest pumpkin in the patch. A whole year has flown by with our precious little bat, and I'm excited to celebrate her birthday. It’s been a wonderful year working for myself, though juggling baby and projects is often difficult. I’m grateful for the fantastic people I've got to work with this year. Here’s to year four of ethical marketing and helping good organisations grow.

If you’re an eco-conscious business owner, you may be thinking about how to make an eco-friendly website for your organisation. Whether you have an existing website that needs a revamp, or an entirely new site, there are many things you can do to make it more eco-friendly.

The article will discuss several ways to make a website greener, such as improving the speed by reducing images and videos, targeting the right audience through SEO, and choosing green suppliers for hosting and website design. It was International Day of the Girl Child yesterday. That may seem like an odd title for an awareness day, but it represents the harsh reality that girls are undervalued in our world and, as such, face more discrimination, hardship and violence on a daily basis. That’s not to say we haven’t made progress, but it has been hard fought and slowly gained.

Sometimes, It is absolutely devastating to think of the world we live in when I look at my own daughter. In many ways, she will have the best life a woman in the world could have, coming from a wealthy country with supportive parents and all the other privileges that are part of her life. She’ll have an education, be able to enter the workplace, be with who she wants and make decisions about her own life. These rights are denied to millions of girls worldwide, so much so that female infanticide continues to be a significant crime, with over 126 million girls and women ā€˜missing’ from the world today. While I am just a tiny part of this big old world, I hope to inspire and educate my daughter to uphold everyone, regardless of s*x or gender, that we must call out the bu****it when we see it. Fighting for equal rights in the UK across work, education, and domestic labour is part of the international fight against violence against women that affects us all.

The world is a fine place and worth fighting for
