Turns out, you can learn a LOT about South Yorkshire as a designer! ✨️

For the past 22 years, I’ve had a front-row seat to some of the great people, brilliant places, fascinating facts and proper local hidden gems through the pages of Aroundtown magazine 💎

Eight of those years have been as Sheaf Design Works, and it’s a real pleasure to work with a team who put so much into bringing each edition together.

So, I thought I’d share a few of my favourite pages, quotes, learnings and events from the current September/October edition, have a scroll and hopefully you too will learn something new!

It was lovely to celebrate owner Cheryl’s big birthday recently with a surprise party. And, in true Aroundtown fashion, Cheryl’s birthday page was kept completely under wraps. Working with editor Amber, it was designed and switched out right before going to press. Pretty sure Cheryl was surprised! 🎉🎂

Yes, sometimes print does go wrong…
…and it’s always that one job that really needs to go right! 😬

But there’s always a Plan B, C and D up my sleeve 🧙‍♀️

Because when there’s a will, there’s always a way, the luxury brochures produced for Susan Routledge | Beauty Business Mentor are now being admired in the hands of prospective new clients as I type.

It only took a late-night SOS, an early-morning rendezvous after a 100+ mile round trip for the pair of us, followed by a five-hour session of unpicking staples, collating pages into the correct order and restapling.

Then an hour round trip to deliver them into the safe hands of my other wonderful clients, Mr & Mrs Helen Portman-Brookes Beauty Brands Connector who, in less than 12 hours, had them at Excel London with Susan, ready for the Professional Beauty UK Shows expo to open.

All in a day’s work, as they say! 😂

If you’re at the expo, Susan is one of the event speakers, so go and say hi!

Me, fan-girling? I don't know what you mean?! 😂
You may know him as the TFI Friday’s ‘bloke who knows what’s going on’, the man who made Sonic the Hedgehog a household name, or the founder of LoveFilm (which later became Prime Video).

All I know is that I was slightly starstruck upon meeting him at My Business Coach Growth Club last week… 😳

A day of learning, creativity, planning and inspiration. We listened as Simon Morris talked us through the highlights of his career, and having spent over ten years as Amazon’s creative lead, there were many. As a room we watched the 2020 Christmas ad a The Show Must Go On, in awe, feeling the emotion, inspired and I think everyone was a little starstruck by that point 💫

Catching up with connections, meeting new businesses and finally hearing from The Apprentice winner Alana Spencer, whose told us how TikTok has taken het brand to a whole new level. And yes, I have now embraced TikTok… though I’m quite a way off 400k followers! 😂

I’m forever grateful to be a creative business owner in Sheffield. This city really is a village, where the talent and opportunities are endless and we get to do things like this.

We’ve been working with Helen Helen Portman-Brookes Beauty Brands Connector since 2022, when we refreshed her brand identity with a shiny new logo, brand fonts, a fine-tuned colour palette and new website 😍

I may be biased, but I think the visuals are beautiful. 😉

We’re currently working on some stunning new print material, adding a little sparkle to the website, as well as providing ongoing social media graphic support.

A 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 dive into design studio life ✨

We’ve been part of the Neepsend/Kelham community since 2019, and it really does feel like a second home (which is a good job because I do mostly live here!) 🏠

From the little things that’ve found their way into the studio, to the artwork and indie businesses all around us, inspiration is everywhere 🤩

Here’s a little snapshot of the everyday details that make me stop and appreciate where I am and how far we’ve come...

A few fun facts behind the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

🫏 The LEGO piñata was a gift from my youngest 🥰

🟥 The Rubik’s Cube was solved by Martin. The boys went through a Rubik’s obsession phase! I can’t solve one, nor do I have any desire to learn the sequences 😂

🌸 My first iMac is a 2001 Flower Power edition and it still kinda works on OS 9. Classic Apple OS is something very different. Back to the days when apps came on CDs and work was saved on Zip drives! iykyk

🪨 My happy rock was another gift from my youngest. It sits in front of me and always makes me smile 🙂🥰

The bags were sourced, postcards produced and branded tags created to tie the whole thing together perfectly 🎀

This week, I had the pleasure of joining a small group of Sheffield business owners at Sheffield Girls' to support the launch of their GCSE and A-level Business Studies courses 🎓📚

Across two interactive sessions, Year 10 and Year 12 students heard first-hand about the reality of running a business - how and why we started, the risks and rewards, start-up costs and cashflow 💷, market research and target audiences 🎯, the skills required and what we love most about doing what we do ❤️.

A great morning inspiring Sheffield’s future entrepreneurs and a brilliant opportunity to reflect on our own business journeys too.

🚨 The latest issue of Infinite Beyond is out, taking us to 24 newsletters designed and produced over the last six years 🚨

That's a lot of hiding things in the pages, fun facts, historical heists, joke corners and tech focuses. Plus a commissioned cartoon by Sheffield illustrator brings every edition of to a close with a smile.
