I purposefully used a janky ugly font that I’ve never seen before on the internet. 👀 I don’t know that it’s beautiful or elegant or even legible but that’s the point.

I wanted to explore (something, anything) ugly because I felt myself getting sucked into fitting-in land.

Whenever I start an Instagram graphic I usually start with my go tos which are often echo chambery things that I’ve seen elsewhere or done before.

Then I get so so SO bored by what I’m seeing on screen - the deep knowing that I’ve seen it all before makes it really difficult for me to execute and craft.

I end up nudging things around looking for something that feels even just a teaspoon interesting rather than cookie cutter, same s**t different day.

Although this might not look as fresh as those new trends, it was a intentional act of saying no to the same same.

It just takes one of us to push boundaries to create the next thing.

A question I always ask: would you rather be a leader or a follower?

Never settle for the same and always take the risk the ugly or weird.

You’ll stand out more that way.

➡️ Why I don't include patterns and/or illustrations in projects as a standard 'deliverable.'

Simply put - each project, each goal and each problem is different.

❓How do we even know if the identity requires a pattern or an illustration until we research and begin the concept exploration? How do we know if that's the solution to the problem?

We just don't know until we've done the work! 🤷🏼‍♀️

For this reason, I'm not a fan of package-solutions because they aren't created with the goal or problem in mind, but instead they're based on a one size fits all approach.

But... what works for one brand, doesn't always work for the next.

Instead I make sure that we have the freedom to explore a pattern or illustrative style *if it makes sense*, but we don't 'include' it based on a set-menu.

I also don't charge the client extra for pattern later down the line either. The way I see it: our clients are paying for the concept and the exploration... in whatever form that takes... to help them reach their goal.

It might include a pattern. It might not. Orrrrr the brand might benefit from a series of comps (like pictured) because that's what makes sense for the concept 💡

Itemising deliverables to the nth degree before the journey has begun is a little presumptuous (eep! sorry for the spice 🌶) ... it also puts you in a tricky place where you *have* to create a pattern - because you said you would!

I aim to create proposals based on goals and solutions, less so about every little deliverable. (It's true that deliverables are important on some level, so that expectations are managed, however.)

I'm sharing more notes on pricing - with a packaging project twist, in a free workshop in a couple of weeks. 💸

I’m super honoured to be invited to speak at the Simply Profitable Designer Summit hosted and created by magician 💜

When I first set out in biz, my dream was to speak at events, write books, educate and give back, alongside running an agency.

Although it’s only just beginning - it’s happening!

The goal of the summit is to help you simplify and streamline elements of your business - take what you already have; then add a new perspective or fresh sprinkle of simplicity.

The summit is curated to help you:
🌙 attract your kind of client
🌙 get systems in place
🌙 level up process or technique
🌙 put profitability first
🌙 create a business that puts you first
... and it does this alongside its generous community spirit and welcoming family vibe.

Ok yes, it sounds too good to be true 🙈

But it’s not - help yourself to your free ticket via the link in my bio if you haven’t already, team. 🎟 @ Sheffield

Whilst I’m here:

I’ve struggled to prioritise running the events amongst the other priorities I have. I’m looking for someone to take over from me and give it the love and TLC that it deserves.
When I agreed to take over the chapter, I naively under estimated the mental and physical bandwidth needed to start a business. I thought I’d have loads of free time for extra things - as it stands, the free time I have I pump back into actually growing and maintaining the business. My focus has been on me.
I feel a guilty for not prioritising LWD and I have been hesitant to admit it.
So here we are, it’s time to ask.
If you’re interested in taking over the Sheffield chapter and would like to breath life back into what *should* be really exciting for the city - let me know ☀️💫 @ Sheffield

I’m working this weekend (I also worked last weekend) but before the self-care, anti-hustle police come at me, remember, everyone is different.
I feel there’s a lot of ‘hustle’ shaming around at the minute to the point where I kind of feel a bit guilty - or shame (!) even for admitting that I sometimes work the weekend. (Or past 6pm Mon-Fri)
I’m working the weekend because I care about the thing I’m working on. In the end, I’m working for me. Sometimes the biggest act of self-care is doing the thing you need to / want to - irrespective of the 9-5 regulation.
I find it all a bit restrictive that I’m ‘supposed’ to only work during the week - as though I’m committing some kind of crime against time by even looking at my laptop at the weekend.
I know my limits and I know when I need to put my foot down, or not. Right now, it’s foot-down-time. Hustle is a gross word, yes, but if it also means hard-work, then it can’t be overlooked. We make things happen with hard-work - you can’t expect to grow without it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to rest too. It doesn’t mean I find it easy (frankly, I don’t) and I’m certainly not advocating 15 hours days. I am advocating choice and freedom though. If you work the weekend, and you like a dose of the old ‘hustle’ every now and then, there’s nothing wrong with that. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, there’s no shame in the game.
The thing is, as business owners we get to decide. And isn’t total freedom and choice to make our own rules the thing we signed up for? For me, absolutely.

~ To *not* do the thing you’ve been wanting to do?
~ To *not* follow through on your ambition for fear of it being too big?
~ To *not* invest in outside help?
~ To *not* launch the thing?
~ To *not* learn, develop and challenge yourself?
To *not* take action because it might be a risk?
We often think of cost in monetary terms - literally what WILL this cost me?! 💸
But let’s stop for a wee moment - what will it cost *in other ways* if you don’t
~ start the thing
~ invest in the thing
~ commit to the thing
~ launch the thing
~ believe in the thing
What are you currently not doing that’s costing you?

Rather wishing I had the balls to do something like this in my home office rather than the vacuous IKEA white wash of current 🤔👀
However I’m currently in the mind space of
~ we bought this house to sell
~ we might not live here very long
~ what if we rent it out? It must be neutral
~ save the best ideas for the forever home
But I’m also in the mind space of
~ f**k it, show me the paint

Currently: pulling past projects into mock ups so that the Our Kind site has some bones on there for you to look at.
Me being me, I wanted to wait until everything was printed and photographed beautifully to launch however I realise that’s a bit procrastinatey and very perfectionisty.
What do you think? Is it better to go live with something unfinished rather than waiting (months) for perfection? 😬

Here’s a picture of my teeth 😅
JK, whilst I’m here let me update you on a few live projects:
🔹 I’ve just sent out a really juicy presentation to a client with three concepts (not one, not two, but three.) For an e-commerce D2C fashion focus brand.
🔹Next week I’ll be working on the Shopify design for a another D2C, a supplement brand (we also covered naming and copy too.)
🔹 We also have a mental health platform in the works which will also sell product too, direct to consumer via the website.
Do you see the theme? My background has always been in designing for product based brands, most often the ones that go into retail. Right now, e-commerce is the THING.
There is talk of “niching down” (🙄) in business and focusing only on one area however I do favour working with brands from different categories and markets. I don’t like that phrase, I don’t like labels and I don’t like limitations.
However, I’m *more* than happy to ride the niche wave, as it’s happened organically without me forcing into market.
The focus is shifting towards creating beautiful and strategic brand experiences, digital to delivery. ~ Packaging and web go hand in hand. ~
If your e-commerce brand has purpose and you can see a brighter world fuelled by your brands existence, then you are 100% Our Kind.
I would encourage you to book your time with me soon to align with a summer launch. 🙋🏻‍♀️ any questions, just ask. 🌝

Sometimes I’m asked whether I’ll move into a ‘proper office’ ~ as in, one outside of my home 🤹🏻‍♀️ do you know what? I don’t really want to just yet 😗
It’s kind of like when people ask if I’m getting married or having kids - I think it’s because I’m approaching 30 and that’s the grown up thing to do 🤗 likewise a ‘proper’ business needs a ‘proper’ office, right?
I don’t plan on building a regular agency situation where we trudge into an open plan space every day bang on 9 ~ *ONE* day I would like to host an easy breezey work space for a growing team (either in Berawa or Barcelona - or both ~ TBC) where there’s no strict regime, but a cool and calm place where as a team we’re invited to work and collab together, without so many of *those* rules. You know the ones.
I want a remote first setup to allow individuals to be free range - if you want to work in Bali for a month with me and the others, then you’re more than welcome. If you want to keep it strictly remote then that’s cool too.
As once said: never be regular. I don’t intend to start now 🤘🏼 @ Sheffield
