Yesterday was a sad day.

We shut the doors to our Birmingham office for the last time and I handed the keys back to the landlord.

After being in business for 13 years, 12 of which were spent at 2 offices in the same building in the Jewellery Quarter, it felt weird to walk away from our connection to the city.

Just to point out that we are very much still in business, we are just moving location!!

When we moved from to Birmingham back in 2010 it massively impacted our business in the best way.
We both loved working in the city centre, called Jewellery Quarter home, and it treated us well over the years.

However even pre covid we noticed a change in the way business was being conducted, with more and more meetings taking place via video call and then the pandemic changed everything. Working from home and flexible working is now very much normal and being in a specific location everyday doesn’t impact how we do business.

So Studio Able V3 is no more, Studio Able V4.0 is now in the making.
More on this in the coming months.

Finally summer has arrived just in time for the launch of The Sporting Social, our latest event project delivered to Bullring, Birmingham.

We designed this event around the concept of celebrating a summer of sport, inspired by the Commonwealth Games being hosted here in our home town this year!

The Sporting Social is the perfect ‘club house’ sat in front of St.Martin's Church where a large format digital screen will show the exciting games along with a vast array of sports fixtures like Wimbledon, US Open and Tour de France throughout the summer season. The bar is stocked with all your favourites and there's plenty on offer at the grill or maybe a sweet treat to get through those nail biting races.

We designed the event as a social space giving guests the option of communal seating in the large central pergola, a more private sunny booth or to relax in a deck chair and catch some rays. Undercover seating was a real focus to ensure we have all bases covered with such unpredictable weather.
A bright and fresh colour palette with a botanical look and feel gives guests a warm welcome on arrival.

A giant deckchair and a winners podium offer the perfect opportunity to spread the word on socials and tell friends what they are missing.

Following our last post showing logo concepts, we are very pleased to show the final store design for Bert’s Books. The unit in Swindon Old Town has enough space for the client to grow into, has a dedicated kids books area and all hand built book shelves are a modern version of traditional panelled shelving, finished in a bright teal colour.

Bert’s Books holds the coveted title of ‘longest project delivery’.

We met with the client in December 2019, and presented concepts for a new core identity and a book shop in a shipping container which were received really well. The retail park that this project was due to land into then didn’t have the utilities in place to service the unit, then Covid.

And so nothing happened for 2 years.

Luckily, lockdown suited the client as online book sales soared, then they discovered an inline unit in Swindon old town, an area that suits their offering and aesthetic. We met back up post lockdown and have recently completed the fit out of Bert’s Books first bricks and mortar location.

This post shows the core logo concepts initially delivered, which do you think the client chose and if your choice, which would you pick?

Next up is a brand & digital project for L&M MediLaw, the legal experts in medical negligence.

After a recommendation from the team at Upload Abode, we worked with L&M MediLaw in developing a brand for a new division at the parent company, the esteemed Levy & McRae law firm based in Glasgow.

L&M MediLaw specialises in medical negligence cases, often for people who are not in a financial position to take the case to court themselves.

The primary factor with the new brand was that it should visually explain the complex medical law process and be accessible for all. The emphasis being, L&M MediLaw care and want the best result for their clients.

The L&M MediLaw core logo took influence from the parent company Levy & McRae brand which uses angular lines to represent shards of light emitting from a lighthouse.
We made these angles more symmetrical and rotated them so they wrap around the word marque. This symbolises the protective arm that L&M MediLaw hold around their clients in a time of need.

The wider visual language is made up from a bright palette and illustrated characters that visually explain the legal process.

The website has a built in booking system to give clients a free video consultation direct with the head solicitor who will be looking after their case.
A visual client journey explains how the process works. There is a suite of video content to help emphasise this and of course the site is accessible.

I never seem to get around to posting updates, but have set aside some time to share a few projects delivered over the last few months.

First up is - Upload Abode.
We met with the team at Upload Abode way back in a life before pandemics, war and rising prices of well - everything!

We helped with a reposition of their brand identity by creating a new marque, defining colour palettes and providing brand guidelines.
But the most interesting prospect was the opportunity to deliver a disruptive reposition of their physical location, within a retail park.

We conceptualised an instantly recognisable glass fronted ‘house shape’ building, which the client loved but then it all kind of, slowed down!
The landlord couldn’t find a space for this, so we looked at different locations, then yes Covid stopped everything.

Two years later and due to the rising costs of materials the original concept was now unaffordable so we value engineered it, staying as true to the idea as possible.

Finally, a full three years after the initial conversation about this, we managed to get this onto the Silverburn retail park and feedback has been extremely positive.

Now upload abode have retail office space as excellent as their customer service.

I always enjoy sharing completed projects.

Not for any gratification but for the accomplishment felt for landing a project that answers the client brief and over delivers on all fronts. Especially in current times, when we are bombarded with negative press and bad news all the time.

The client was sure of the direction they want their business to go and what they wanted from their brand, so form and function had to work in harmony. We approached the project with the instagram generation in mind, where every experience is documented, filtered and shared.

The design captures this perfectly and is highly instagramable, in a palette of soft pink tones. The architecture inspired by Parisian boutiques and the interior dominated by a large rose flower wall and ceiling feature, selfie swing and bespoke furniture and neon style signage.
