This crane isolator had well and truly given up. Old, worn and no longer doing its job properly. On industrial equipment like this, that's not something you can afford to leave.

Isolators are there for one reason - to safely cut power when needed, whether that's for maintenance, an emergency or routine shutdown. When one fails, it's not just inconvenient, it's a genuine safety risk.

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing and more accurately referred to us EET (Electrical Equipment Testing).

It's the process of checking electrical appliances (think kettles, laptops, extension leads, power tools, office equipment, etc) to make sure they're safe to use.

During a PAT test, we check things like:
• The cable and plug for damage
• Correct wiring inside the plug
• Earth continuity and insulation resistance
• That the appliance is functioning safely overall
If it passes, it gets a sticker with the test date so anyone can see at a glance it's been checked and it's safe to plug in.

Why it matters:
Faulty appliances are a genuine fire and shock risk and a lot of the time you can't tell just by looking at one. A frayed cable inside a casing or a loose wire in a plug won't always show any obvious signs.....until it does!

For businesses, it's also often a legal requirement and something insurers and landlords expect to see evidence of.

This fuse board upgrade came off the back of an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) and it's a good example of exactly why these checks matter.

The old board was outdated, offered nowhere near the level of protection modern regulations require and was flagged as a safety concern.

We swapped this out for a modern consumer unit with full RCD protection across every circuit. Properly protecting the home and fully compliant with current standards.

Plugging one extension lead into another to reach that awkward socket. We get it...it's convenient!!

But it's also one of the easiest ways to overload a circuit and create a serious fire risk.

Extension leads are only rated to carry so much power. Chain them together or overload one with heaters, kettles and chargers all at once, means you're pushing way past what it's designed for.

Quick fix:
✅ Never plug an extension lead into another extension lead
✅ Check the total wattage of what's plugged in
✅ If you're short on sockets, get more fitted by a qualified electrician (that's us by the way! 😉)

Lights coming on earlier... and so are the electrical faults 💡

As the nights draw in, we always see the same thing...lights that have been "a bit weird" all summer suddenly start properly playing up. Flickering, tripping or just not coming on at all.

Don't just live with it or keep resetting the trip switch. If something's not right, it's not going to fix itself.
