And don’t be afraid to start a sentence with “and”…

Punchy copy is easier to read and simpler to digest.

Journalists use short sentences and paragraphs to keep a reader’s interest and get the point across quickly.

Longer prose is great for words you want to lose yourself in.

But it doesn’t work so well online.

Here, in the digital world of your site and your socials, think like a journalist.

Because you need to capture and keep attention too.

You need to get your point across, and quickly.

And you want your readers to take that point in, and remember it.

That’s the job of the short sentence 🙌

They’re a keeper, right? 🥰

I’m not saying I nail it all the time - or that I don’t for that matter.

But when it happens…

It’s so good when they love the words you spent hours writing as much as you do.

It’s the best kind of validation for all the researching and brainstorming and planning and writing.

It’s all the good feels 🥳

This is the best bit of working for ourselves, right?

So, just to put ourselves in a great mood for today, let’s all dig out the last great bit of feedback we had and have a little happy moment.

And then take that into the rest of the week.

Well, this made me very happy 🥰

A wonderful new client, a brilliant new project complete ✔️ and it’s a beauty product - one of my absolute favourites 🙌 I confess I did a little happy dance when I got the brief for this one!

And here’s a good chance for a little reminder - don’t forget to share the lovely words you receive from happy clients.

Positive feedback is a WAY more credible ambassador for what you can do for customers than you just telling people yourself.

Curiosity = the creative spark for good copy…

I love the variety of my job. Being naturally curious, I’m best knowing a little about a lot.

I find that the diversity of writing for brands in different industries keeps ideas fresh, and helps words flow.

Every day’s different, so there’s no stagnation.

This week, a work chat with a potential client came round to me not having written before for their particular field.

I was off, launched into how I like to be bombarded with information so I can do an immersive deep dive and surface with new ideas and a fresh take…

… and they stopped me because they already understood.

They didn’t want me to come at it with an expert view.

They want to stand out from the crowd, find a point of difference and approach what they do from an angle that’s new, interesting, unique and easy to grasp for a layperson…

… because that’s what their potential customers are, at first.

(Don’t you love when someone just gets it? 😁)

So my pick for the best soft skill a copywriter can have is 💯 curiosity.

Show up when people search for what you sell with this super-quick, 5 minute makeover for your Insta bio.

☞ Get your best keyword or phrase in your profile name field - or your handle.

☞ Pop some alternatives in your bio text and make sure you’ve got your physical location in there if it’s relevant to your customers.

☞ DON’T put hashtags in your bio, unless they’re yours and yours alone! They’re clickable, so there’s your potential customer, off looking at everyone else’s stuff 🤦🏼‍♀️
