STUDIO BAD MONTHLY Practice Updates

We are excited to share news about our Paddock House & Paddock Gardens project, updates from our Bristol church scheme, and good news about the Brick Pavilion.

Planning submitted in Brockenhurst

We have recently submitted planning for two new houses in the village of Brockenhusrt, in the New Forest National Park.

Paddock House is a low energy, five bedroom replacement dwelling, and Paddock Garden is a smaller three-bed new build home, designed to maximise the potential of the owners adjacent field.

Our designs thoughtfully respond to the rural setting; we have carefully considered the plot ratios of neighbouring homes in order to deliver contemporary, sustainable homes that are balanced and appropriate for this village centre context within the national park.

Planning Secured for Brick Pavilion

We are absolutely delighted to have received planning approval for our new arts community facility located in the heart of Chichester, reusing the locally important Brick Pavillion.

The building, having stood vacant for several years, had fallen into disrepair resulting in it becoming a magnet for ongoing antisocial behaviour and vandalism.

We are thrilled to be reimagining the building, working in collaboration with Chichester Community Development Trust, to bring it back into the heart of the community.

We are looking forward to bringing updates as this project progresses to site.

Progress at
St Barnabas Church

Our phased works at the Bristol based St Barnabas Church are progressing well. The first step of our designs proposals focuses on improving the internal layout to create a space that functions better for the local community, following the feedback from our engagement workshops.

SENSITIVE CONVERSION OF A HERITAGE ASSET
Working with the owners of The Granary, Studio BAD have carefully and thoughtfully designed a scheme which converts and infills an existing open carport space on the ground floor aspect of the building. The design has reimagined the building, delivering an additional bedroom upstairs and extending the living accommodation on the ground floor, to ensure the long-term future of the building for the young owners.
The unique property is part of a late 18th century agricultural homestead model farm, designed by the renowned architect Samuel Wyatt. Although The Granary isn’t listed independently it sits within a curtilage of a listed building, and is of heritage interest due to it being well-preserved example of common agricultural architecture from the period.
Whilst the property had been converted into a two-bedroom residential home in the late 1990’s, the current owners wanted to further amend the building to extend the ground floor living space by carefully infilling two of the open bays. This would also allow the first floor to be converted into the private part of the home, with the living space reimagined as an additional bedroom / work space. The layout of the first floor is designed to carefully follow the historic layout, from the third bedroom reflecting the position of the original grain bin to reinforcing the heritage of the building.
An emphasis has been placed on retaining the character of the ancillary buildings which were considered essential, both in terms of individual value and the setting of the listed building. On the exterior to highlight the infill as a modern change, this portion will be finished with frameless, contemporary glazing recessed slightly from the exterior so the change can be easily read and the visual impact on the heritage aspect is kept to a minimum.

Studio BAD have completed a deep renovation of a 1960’s bungalow in Brixham, South Devon. The project has reconfigured the original property, transforming the tired dwelling to deliver a beautiful, contemporary home that fully engages with its elevated site above the harbour.
The design brief centred on reimaging the existing property, including a sustainable upgrade, creating a home perfectly suited the owner’s lifestyle while offering flexibility for extended family visit. Replacing the old glazing with large-scale, slim frame windows has increased the natural light throughout the interior and enhanced the connection to the spectacular coastal views.
The roof terrace has been extended and improved, now connecting seamlessly from the living room. A new glass balustrade eliminates visual barriers, allowing uninterrupted views to be enjoyed from within the home.
Exterior materials were carefully selected for their durability in the harsh coastal climate, as well for their visual quality. These finishes reference local materials, adding a sense of place while elevating the overall design.

We are absolutely delighted and thrilled to have received planning approval for our new Arts community facility in the heart of Chichester, reusing and re imagining the existing Brick Pavillion. Our client Chichester Community Development Trust Liz Woodsell Clare de Bathe

We now look foard to bringing this existing building back to like with Chichester Community Development Trust

Read more about the project below:

Chichester Community Development Trust (CDT) approached Studio BAD to explore the potential reimagination and redevelopment of the Brick Pavilion, a vacant, locally significant building situated in the north-west corner of Priory Park, Chichester, West Sussex.

The building, having stood vacant for several years, had fallen into disrepair resulting in it becoming a magnet for ongoing antisocial behaviour and vandalism. Working in collaboration with the CDT, we have explored how the neglected building could be restored to deliver community engagement, and bring this underused community asset back into productive use.
The feasibility study looks at how the Brick Pavilion could be transformed into a vibrant community facility. The vision includes integrating pavilion with the existing park amenities, such as the chapel and café, to support each other and enhance the offer.

Architecturally the strategy is grounded in layers; conservation, restoration and contemporary intervention. A sympathetic restoration of the front façade will respect and enhance the buildings historic character, while internal refurbishment and thermal upgrades will improve performance and longevity.
The unsafe, and architecturally unimportant extensions at the rear of the property will be removed, replaced with new squared off larger extensions. The design takes the line of the existing roofline and extends vertically, echoing the original into the new addition.

Internally a distinctly modern, open plan space will be created space that supports flexible needs. On the ground floor extensive glazing will create a sense of openness, encouraging interaction between the interior and the park.

We have just submitted our latest new house project in for planning to the New Forest National Park, in Brockenhurst.

Paddock House and Paddock Garden will deliver two new independent homes. Paddock Homes is a replacement dwelling, delivering a low energy five bedroom family house. Paddock Gardens is a smaller new build, maximising the potential of the adjacent, and underused paddock field, to deliver a three bedroom home.

Take a look inside this transformed home in the New Forest

Thanks to the Daily echo for publishing our latest project in the New Forest, where we won best Residential designer in the New Forest!

A 1970s property has been transformed into a low-carbon forever home after a major renovation.

Located on the edge of Brockenhurst in the New Forest National Park, the chalet-style house was extended and modernised by Studio BAD Architects to support the evolving needs of its owners.

Their goal was to create a sustainable, lifelong home that prioritised beauty, accessibility, and environmental responsibility.

The clients said: “From our very first meeting with Darren and Studio BAD team, it was clear that we had found someone who was listening and importantly hearing our ideas, priorities and intentions.
“As we are of a mature age and this is to be our forever home, a warm and comfortable, accessible and environmentally responsible property was our goal and with Studio BAD’s design and assistance we have been able to score it.”

The owners said they are “delighted” with the results and can now “enjoy life without worrying about changing situations regarding aging, mobility and access.”
Studio BAD’s design focused on maximising flexibility, improving environmental performance, and strengthening the connection between the home and its garden.
Modest side and rear extensions allowed for a reconfigured internal layout, improving circulation while drawing in natural light and garden views.
A key feature is the step-free ground floor, which includes a future-proofed guest suite that could become the main bedroom if needed.

The open-plan kitchen and dining area overlook the garden and are lit by expansive glazing and a central rooflight, while passive solar design improves year-round comfort.

Sustainability was central to the project, with triple glazing, a warm-deck roof, air source heat pump, underfloor heating, and solar panels all helping to significantly reduce energy use.
Much of the interior and landscaping was completed by the owners themselves to keep the project within budget.
Brockenhurst House was completed in 2025 and has since won the 2025 Build It Award for Best Architect for an Extension Project, as well as the 2026 New Forest Building Design Award for Best Residential
