29th September is World Heart Day & someone close to our hearts has something to say...
Our wonderful Lainey.
โค๏ธ | My SCAD Story
This year World Heart Day means something very different to me.
In June, I experienced a scare that has completely changed my life. I had two heart attacks.
I was fit and healthy. I didn't have what I thought were the typical risk factors for a heart attack, so it was the last thing I ever expected to happen to me.
For weeks, I had been feeling extremely tired. I honestly thought I had just been overdoing things and pushing myself too hard. I knew I had a four-day break coming up, so I told myself I would rest then and just carried on.
Then, after waiting four weeks for a routine booked telephone appointment with my doctor, I mentioned that I had experienced chest pain and pain radiating down my arm that day.
The doctor immediately told me to go to A&E.
Seven hours later, I was told I had experienced a SCAD heart attack, caused by a tear in one of the arteries supplying my heart.
Looking back, I honestly don't know what would have happened if that doctor hadn't listened to what I was telling her and acted so quickly.
She may have saved my life.
SCAD - Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, can happen to people who may appear fit and healthy and don't have the usual risk factors associated with heart attacks.
That's why I want to tell my story.
I want to show my support for Beat SCAD UK, a charity dedicated to raising awareness of SCAD, supporting those affected and their families, and helping fund vital research into this condition.
For me, this isn't simply about supporting a charity.
It's personal.
I want people to know that heart attacks don't always happen to the person you expect.
They can happen to someone who is fit, healthy and carrying on with everyday life.
Listen to your body. Don't ignore symptoms. And if something doesn't feel right, get it checked.
If sharing my story means even one person recognises the signs, seeks help and gets the treatment they need, then something positive can come from what happened to me.
