AI is the buzzword of 2023 and that train is staying firmly on the tracks!

Google has recently announced their next generation of search engine - the AI lead Google SGE (Search Generative Experience).

This is not to be confused with the sh*tshow that is Google Bard.

Google SGE will see AI generated “snapshots” produced at the top of SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

This pushes down the website results you’re used to seeing.

Alongside the generated text, you’ll potentially be greeted with a few suggested websites to dive deeper into more info.

A cool feature though, is the conversational mode 💬

You’ll be able to continue searching for more specific information with suggested follow-up questions.
Similar to ChatGPT, Google will remember and bear in mind what you’ve previously mentioned…like a conversation.

This all sounds great, but terrible for SEO, right? 😱

“But why would anyone need to visit websites anymore?” is no doubt a question on your mind.

Well there’s a few answers as to why it’s not going to affect Search Engine Optimisation - the biggest one being…

💰💰 MONEY!!! 💰💰
💲 Google makes 58% of its annual revenue from Google search result ads ($162.45 billion).

💲 11.7% of their annual revenue (only a measly $32.78 billion) comes from their Google Network Ads (Display ads). These are adverts people bid on to be displayed on websites!!

Google will not want to throw that money down the drain!

Another reason why SGE won’t change SEO is the fact it uses AI.
The AI needs websites to collect and build information from.

They want their users to have the best experience possible and this will come from high quality content across websites, otherwise everyone will run away to BING 🤢

Lastly, people prefer to read content by humans. They want insights, like testimonials & reviews, from others to make decisions.

Google has described their AI snapshots as “a jumping-off point” for information.

It’ll get you started then provide you with suggested content to get you going.

Google has also said that not every topic will show snapshots either.

So, what does this mean for SEO?

💎 High quality content is going to be more relevant than ever.
👩‍⚕️ Keeping your website in good health is going to be just as, if not more, important.
🔍 User search intent is going to be more obvious

If you’re now bricking it and not dishing out high quality content to please the algorithm Gods, let's have a chat to calm those nerves!

E-E-A-T. Sometimes referred to as E-A-T.
Something we all need to do! 🍽

Whether EEAT is an actual ranking factor is up for debate, however Google do referenece it in their Search Quality Rater Guidelines - a document used by third-party contractors who assist Google in their evalutions on websites appearing in search results.

EEAT isn't exactly tangible, like Backlinks, and Google's algorithm can't directly understand the human concepts of being experienced, authorative or trustworthy.

However, Google's Quality Raters give feedback to Google about results and whether the ones showing are of high Page Quality - of which they take into consideration EEAT.

Let's take a quick look at what the guidelines say about each one to give you an idea of how to apply this to your website.

Experience : Consider the extent to which the content creator has the necessary first-hand or life experience for the topic. Many types of pages are trustworthy and achieve their purpose well when created by people with a wealth of personal experience.

Expertise : Consider the extent to which the content creator has the necessary knowledge or skill for the topic. Different topics require different levels and types of expertise to be trustworthy.

Authoritativeness: Consider the extent to which the content creator or the website is known as a go-to source for the topic.

All three of these come together to build a higher level of trust from the user.

So, what do you need to do?

- Dish out high value and UNIQUE content whether that be blogs, video, social media etc (try all 3), and do so regularly.

- Touch on ALL subjects within your field.
If you're a fish tackle shop write about rods, the different baits that fish prefer, fishing seasons, and the fish you can expect to catch at different times of the year.

TIP: Create a big mind map of these topics - that's what we do!

- Educate people. Show people you know your stuff (An example is this very post!) 👩‍🏫
