These days, a successful business owner must try and look for ways of getting that competitive edge over its competitors, adding to the bottom line to grow and prosper.

In recent years, many companies, big and small, are ‘restructuring’ their workforce’s and the way they work to make themselves leaner and ultimately more profitable … HOWEVER that can create a void in certain areas of the business and the need to bring in specialist skills through outsourcing to a freelance operation, either remotely or onsite.

Using marketing as an example – here’s why hiring me to do your marketing makes good business sense for you:

As a freelance operation, I love the flexibility of setting my own working hours. Nearly every business needs to do marketing. It could be the more traditional route with advertising in print, experiential options or through broadcast media like radio or TV, or there’s the digital and online route with social media, Google and such like.

The trick is identifying the route(s) that best reach your target audience ... the people who want to buy your products or services.

Bigger businesses can spend thousands on their marketing, however for the smaller business that isn’t possible, so ever Wednesday I’ll be giving you some simple guidance to get the maximum impact from your marketing budget by reaching your target customers.

Here's an outline of what to expect from this marketing guide for smaller businesses:
· What is marketing?
· Identifying your market/target audience
· Using market research

· Four good marketing options for small businesses
· Word of mouth marketing
· Creating a marketing strategy
· Developing a marketing plan
· Marketing on a budget

In this article today I’ll focus on the first two.

What is marketing?
Marketing is the process of finding your market/target audience and making a connection with it. It is quite different from selling, which is pushing your products or services to a market that is already established. Think of it as ‘matchmaking’ ... partnering your products or services with customers who want to buy them.
It is also about raising awareness of what your business offers, with the expectation that it will reach your target market. Maybe to maintain your position in the marketplace against your competitors reminding people that you are there, or you have set a growth target for the business?

Identifying your market
This is your first step ... identify your market. This will probably seem obvious to you, but you’re not the target.
Establish the USP(s) and finer details of your product or service the people most likely to buy from you (your core market), which accounts majority of your sales. There is also a secondary market which has a wider demographic.

Next Wednesday I’ll talk about the best way to reach these markets using market research and reveal the main areas of marketing.
