The new iPhone 18 Pro is out, with variable aperture, manual controls and 4K at 120fps. It's a seriously good video camera.

This isn't one.

If you're filming for your business or charity, the upgrades that make the biggest difference cost almost nothing.

Sound first. A £20 clip-on mic will improve your video more than a new phone.

Quiet. Ask everyone to put their phones on silent, with vibrate off too. Switch off fans, air con and anything else humming in the background. And politely ask people to stop rattling keys, tapping their feet or jingling loose change. Mics pick up everything.

Light. Face a window. Don't put one behind you.

Background. Check the shot before you press record. Move any rubbish, clutter or anything that shouldn't be seen. Watch out for logos and branding too, especially anything that competes with or contradicts your own.

Steady. Prop the phone on something, or use a cheap tripod.

Questions. Ask "tell me about..." rather than anything with a yes/no answer.

Length. Under a minute. Cut the first ten seconds, which are usually warm-up.

New phone or old, that's most of it.

Only 5% of working-age adults with a learning disability in the UK are in paid work. 86% say they want a job.

This week the government announced it will widen its Jobs Guarantee to young disabled people from April 2027.

Policy matters. But the work of building confidence, skills and friendships is already happening in small local charities, every week.

This summer I was lucky enough to film with Always Bee You CIO in Ware. They run social clubs, life skills and work opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues in Hertfordshire.

If your charity is doing work the headlines are only just catching up with, I'd love to help you show it.

Do you have a bright, cosy office space or studio space that we could film in for Future Living Hertford?
Unfortunately, there is no budget for hire as this is a non-funded promotional film where all are taking part for no fee.
Big Ask, I know but Future Living is a fantastic charity that helps a great number of men, women, and children who are survivors of domestic abuse. They also run affordable counselling and courses for those affected by domestic abuse.
We would need it for Sunday, the 4th of October, and ideally in the East Hertfordshire area.
Please give me a call on 07956 579 548 or email: [email protected] if you can help.

Everyone's giving away free AI prompts this week, 150 of them.
All designed to help you write better marketing content, hooks, positioning, sales copy, the works.

Here's mine.

One camera. Zero prompts. Years of experience.

No prompt gets you a trustee who means it, or a founder who still gets emotional explaining why they started. That takes someone in the room who knows how to disappear.

If you'd rather have that than another fill-in-the-brackets list, you know where I am.

People respond to what's in front of them far more reliably than they respond to good intentions. Just the merest change of environment or energy will make a difference.

Children go back to school across England next week, as they do every September, after their long summer break. Most classrooms have already been reset before a single child walks in. New displays decorate the walls. Seating plans have changed. Official-looking timetables are pinned up fresh, and daunting.

Nobody sits the children down and asks them to behave differently on day one. The room does that before anyone's said a word.

Teachers are aware of this, and their classrooms are refreshed to produce a calmer, more composed start to term than one that still looks like last July. Of course, parents feel it also. They've bought the new uniform, hauled in the stationery and the numerous games kits. That freshly bought lunchbox calling out from the kitchen worktop changes the whole tone of a Sunday evening, weeks before term even starts.

It's about creating an environment that works to get the most from its participants. It's really a pre-production job as much as anything else.

It's no different to organising the environment for a shoot: sorting the cables, clearing the background, getting the lighting correct before the client turns up. It's always amazing to see the change in a client when they realise the room/studio is set up to shoot. They become intentional, focused, and some even turn their phones off. I don't have to remind people what to do, the environment we have created does that for me.

Organise the environment first, and the person in front of the camera does the rest.

A year ago, people were writing LinkedIn posts about Andy Burnham's comms style as Mayor of Manchester.

Last month he became Prime Minister.

Not because of the comms alone, obviously. But it didn't hurt that he was one of the only senior politicians who never looked like he'd rather be anywhere else in an interview, took the same message and repeated it until it stuck, and let himself sound like a person instead of a briefing document. Labour's own executive tried to keep him out of Parliament earlier this year, voting 8 to 1 against him. He ended up leader unopposed anyway, with the highest number of MP nominations any Labour leadership contest has ever recorded.

Whatever you think of his politics, that's a masterclass in building a public profile that outlasts the people trying to gatekeep it.

A lot of charities we work with have a different problem. Not gatekeeping, more like invisibility. Brilliant work happening, but hardly anyone outside the sector hears about it, often because the person who could tell the story best (a CEO, a founder, a trustee who's been there twenty years) has never really been on camera.

It doesn't take a comms department of five. It takes:

One message, repeated until people can say it back to you Making it genuinely easy for someone to talk to a real human A personality your charity is willing to stand behind, not soften for everyone Someone from the team on camera consistently, sounding like themselves rather than reading a script

None of that needs a Downing Street operation. It just needs someone to decide the story's worth telling out loud.

What's actually stopping charities from doing more of this?

Funders support what they understand.

If your charity's work is hard to sum up in a sentence, video usually does it better than another paragraph on a grant form.

We've been filming charities and community organisations for many years. The people, the impact, the reasons it matters.

What's your story?

Lots of our enquiries start the same way. A business is changing: new premises, a role that's hard to explain, a service people don't quite get yet. The words on a page aren't doing the job anymore.
We make video that explains things clearly, in your own voice, whatever form that needs to take. It's not a showreel. It's something that actually helps people understand you before you've even met.
If that sounds familiar, happy to have a chat about content clarity.

First impressions are made visually. Always.

Whether it's a LinkedIn profile, a website, a funding bid or a board presentation, the quality of your imagery and video tells people what to expect before a single word is read.

At our regular Thursday morning BNI Hertford meeting last week, it struck me what a great summer morning it was for some portraits of our members. Meet Luke Johnson of ATouch OfGrass, Farren Brooker of Bracey's Accountants Limited, and Richard Mcneil of S R Electrical Herts Ltd.

If your organisation's visual communications are not reflecting the quality of what you actually do, get in touch.
