Rotary Clubs join forces to support local young carers.

Freshly made pizza, a game of king of the jungle, and the “Great Boat Bake Off” were just some of the highlights for 10 young carers from Falkirk & Clackmannanshire Young Carers Project after spending a week on board with Ocean Youth Trust Scotland. The trip was supported by local Rotary Clubs who joined together to enable deserving young people from their communities to have the adventure of a lifetime.

In July, the group spent 5 days on sailing the 72ft yacht Alba Explorer and the Clubs that helped make this trip possible recently visited the boat to find out for themselves what the young people got up to.

Coming together to support the voyage were 4 Rotary Clubs from the region where the young carers live; Rotary Clubs of Alloa, Falkirk, Grangemouth, and Larbert. By joining forces, they allowed the young crew to take a break from their caring responsibilities and learn new skills, make new friends, and have lots of fun and laughter along the way.

Although the Rotary Club of Alloa is in a different Rotary District to the Falkirk, Grangemouth and Larbert clubs, this was no barrier to the clubs working together as between them they sponsored all 10 young carers who sailed on the Alba Explorer.

According to a new report released by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), a social policy research charity as many as 19 million British people are living on inadequate or barely adequate incomes and can be described as “just about managing at best” from a personal finance perspective.

The report also raises concerns that increases in the inflation rate could mean that there are many more Brits that could be counted among those whose incomes are barely enough to get by. There are millions around the country who could be tipped into poverty in the coming years if the cost of living increases.

The risks are reckoned to be particularly acute for single parents and households in which there are several children but only one parent working on a full-time basis.

“Government focus on people on modest incomes is welcome, but it cannot be at the expense of those at the poorest end of the income scale: it must remember ‘just about managing’ today can become poverty tomorrow.”

A major problem for many people and families throughout the UK is that the costs of essential goods has been rising at a considerably faster pace than average wages since 2008."

“The high cost of living has already helped push four million more people [since 2008/09] below an adequate income, and if the cost of essentials such as food, energy and housing rise further, we need to take action to ease the strain,” says Campbell Robb from the JRF.
