🌷 Happy International Women's Day! 🌷
Today, we're proud to celebrate the incredible achievements of women around the world, including their vital role in advancing democracy. From advocating for equal representation to championing human rights, women have been at the forefront of shaping our democratic institutions.
✊ 1918 - The Representation of the People Act grants voting rights to certain women over 30 in the UK.
✊ 1928 - The Equal Franchise Act extends voting rights to all women over 21, on par with men.
💷 1970 - The Equal Pay Act comes into force in the UK, prohibiting pay discrimination based on gender.
♀ 1975 - The S*x Discrimination Act is enacted, making it illegal to discriminate against women in employment, education, and other areas.
🎓 1979 - Margaret Thatcher becomes the UK's first female Prime Minister.
⚖ 1993 - Baroness Lawrence - After the tragic murder of her son, Stephen Lawrence, became a leading campaigner for justice and equality, breaking barriers in advocacy.
🌍 2003 - Baroness Amos became the first black woman to serve in the UK Cabinet as Secretary of State for International Development.
📜 2010 - The Equality Act consolidates previous legislation and strengthens protections against discrimination, including gender discrimination, in the workplace.
🏛 2019 - Women make up 34% of Members of Parliament in the UK, a record high.
