Marketing and sales are often lumped into the same category.

They are seen as things that intermingle and work as one thing.

You only have to visit the latest online jobs board to see the abundance of roles asking for sales and marketing, and worse, some who ask for marketing but the description of the role is very much sales.

I can imagine how difficult it is for these companies to find the people they want. But, that's not the whole story...

Happy World Creativity and Innovation day - so let me know what you’re creating today.

This is what I’ve been working on - it’s a rag rug art piece for a project I was involved with alongside Redcar Palace and is a rag rug version of the land army WWII propaganda poster.

It’s taken me about seven months to get this far and is also related to my newest fiction work in progress about a land girl and a murder .

This week’s quote is one of my own.
And one I wholeheartedly stand by.

If you just jump from shiny object to shiny object, you’ll get nowhere fast with no real strategy behind it.

Start with the foundations and build from there.

Endlessly chasing the latest one thing that is guaranteed success for you?

Been watching these big guys with their promises of easy ways to make big money fast?

It’s easy to get sucked in to these things, and then get disappointed when they don’t work for you.

But, the big secret they’re not telling you is that it’s not about finding one marketing tactic that will work - you have to stop skipping the important first step - and that is the bit where you plan your marketing based on what your audience needs, and then only do the tactics that fit with this plan - this is the only way to succeed.

I often get asked about the reasons to hire a marketing expert, but let’s flip that.

Here’s a few reasons not to hire someone:

1. Your website isn’t up to scratch or is outdated and you've no plans to change it,
2. You've no idea what a marketing person does,
3. You don’t have time to pay attention to what’s going on,
4. You want someone to just carry out your orders,
5. You don’t want to create any content

The reason these are important is because if you’re not ready to hire someone, no amount of work the marketer does will make a difference. You’re much better off starting at the bottom and working through building an understanding while you go.
