A new logo is a great way to highlight a company’s milestone anniversary…

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Porteous Family Funeral Directors in Edinburgh and I was asked to create a logo and new marketing materials to mark the occasion.

Here’s that logo and a couple of adverts which have been printed in several publications across Edinburgh this year…

OPRA Packaging asked me to help with updating a leaflet which they send out with samples of their cutlery packaging. They were using an A4 sheet which had been created and printed in-house. It said what it needed to, but was crying out for make-over. It needed a professional touch to reflect the values of the company and the quality of its products.

I took the information to hand, incorporated new photographs and developed a new brand-style to create a DL roll-fold flyer and a wallet to keep the samples beautifully presented. These could then be handed out at events or posted out to prospective clients.

This is where my journey to becoming a graphic designer began… King Edward VI College, Stourbridge

The rooms in the photos were the art rooms where I spent most of my A-Level days. One looks pretty much the same as it did back in the ‘90s. I remember producing a large-scale collage, which the art teacher commented on as being ‘a great piece of graphics’. And there it was - the comment that made me choose Graphic Design over Interior Design.

I was back there today for the alumni celebrations - 50 years of sixth form education.

It was lovely to be back; to see how the college has grown and changed; and to reminisce about the very happy two years I was there.

New jumper!

I know fashions change and some old knitting patterns are so outdated they need to go in the bin, but…

With five sea days on our recent cruise, I decided I might have enough free time to knit another jumper. My mum had an old pattern which I could see some potential in - assuming I could make a few changes to make it more ‘me’…

Using a much softer yarn and with a few alterations to make the cuff longer, the sleeve wider and the overall length shorter - I’m chuffed with how it’s turned out 🤗

Might try it again in a plain colour. Maybe aubergine for autumn?

I can’t lie - I was nervous about having a month off work for a family holiday!

But the time went so fast and we saw (and did) so much… Vancouver, Alaska and Hawaii were full of treats - from the landscape and wildlife to the cycling, kayaking and snorkelling. We had a blast.

I’ll be back at my desk tomorrow! Let’s hope I can remember how to turn on my Mac 🙈

Times flies so quickly. I can’t believe it was a year ago today that the Bulls in the City art trail officially opened in Birmingham.

So much work went into the planning, promoting and auction of the bulls - all of which raised an incredible £241,000 for Birmingham Hospice and I was honoured to play a small part in it… from creating the logo to designing fundraising guides, trail maps, tea towels and many more printed things, I enjoyed every minute!
