One thing I always notice in great retail spaces is that they make you want to explore.

Walking around the new Space NK in Bath this week, I wasn’t just looking at the products themselves. I was noticing how they were presented.

There were moments of discovery.
Products grouped in a fun way that encouraged browsing.
Stories being told through displays rather than simply lining products up on shelves.

A sense of fun and curiosity that makes you want to keep wandering.

A treatment room and multiple makeup try out areas made the experience feel so interactive - something you can’t get online.

For me, that’s what great visual merchandising is all about.
It’s not just making things look beautiful.
It’s creating an experience that makes people want to stay a little longer, discover something new and enjoy the process of shopping.

Those principles don’t just apply to national retailers either.

Long before you answer the phone, welcome someone through the door or reply to an enquiry, people are already forming an impression.

They’re noticing things like:

• Your website and how easy it is to navigate.
• Your branding and whether it feels consistent and memorable.
• Your shopfront, signage or reception area.
• The layout of your space.
• The storytelling and quality behind photography or displays.
• How easy it is to understand what you do.

None of these things work in isolation.

Together, they shape how people experience your business and whether they feel confident enough to take the next step.

That’s why I don’t see visual merchandising, branding, websites and social media as separate services.

They’re all part of the same conversation.

They’re all communicating on your behalf.

Could this be one of the most misunderstood and underrated marketing techniques? 👀

A common misconception I hear a lot is that Visual Merchandising is just about “making things look pretty”

🙅‍♀️It is so much more than that… involving using customer psychology and strategic placement and planning to boost sales, repeat business, brand awareness and footfall/traffic.

You might be surprised at how it could apply to your business, even if you don’t have a physical space or shop…

For many retailers, July is when Christmas starts feeling a little more real.

The stock has already been ordered. Now it’s about everything that comes next.

Window concepts.

Display schemes.

Merchandising plans.

Store layouts.

Installation dates.

Making sure everything is ready before the festive rush arrives.

If your Christmas VM is on your radar, I do still have some availability for:
• Christmas display scheme planning
• Window and in-store installations
• Seasonal merchandising support
• One-off VM consultancy
• Ongoing retail support

I work with both independent businesses and larger retailers across the UK and abroad. Whether you need help developing a scheme, refining an existing concept or simply an extra pair of hands to bring it all together.

If you’d like to chat before my Christmas diary fills up, feel free to drop me a message 💬

These recent heatwaves have got me thinking…

Many of us happily wander around little independent shops on holiday in 35°C.

We’ll browse for ages, stop for a coffee, discover somewhere new and generally take our time.

So why does a hot day at home often lead to quieter high streets?

Recent figures showed the last June heatwave contributed to a drop in UK high street footfall.

But I don’t think it’s simply because it’s hot.

I think it’s about motivation.

On holiday, shopping often becomes part of the experience.

Back home, if we’re only popping out for one thing, convenience usually wins.

That made me wonder...

Countries with hotter climates have gradually adapted to the way people shop. In parts of Spain and Italy, many independent businesses still close during the hottest part of the day and reopen later into the evening. In many European towns, shopping naturally becomes more of an evening activity once the temperatures drop.

As hotter summers become more common here in the UK, could customer-facing businesses start adapting too?

Not because there’s one right answer, but because customer behaviour is always evolving.

Maybe it’s:

Tweaking opening hours during a heatwave.
Creating more reasons to pop in rather than simply purchase.
Offering a cool drink or a refreshing product demonstration.
Giving your website and online channels a little more attention while fewer people are browsing in person.
Planning experiences around how customers are behaving, not how they’ve always behaved.
I don’t think this is really a conversation about the weather.

I think it’s a conversation about understanding customer behaviour and being willing to evolve alongside it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts...

If hotter summers become more common in the UK, what small adaptations do you think customer-facing businesses - or even we as shoppers - might naturally start making? ☀️
