🎭 When the Day Greets the Night: The 2026 Roker Eclipse 🌘

This Wednesday, August 12th, our coastline will bear witness to a rare celestial dance. The moon will steal across the sun, draping Roker in a twilight shadow as daylight fades to an eerie, beautiful 91% dusk.

Set your watches for this cosmic symphony:
⏰ 6:10 PM – The first silver bite: The eclipse begins.
🔥 7:07 PM – The golden crescent: The sun is nearly entirely hidden.
⏰ 8:01 PM – The final curtain: Light returns to the sea.As the sun dips low over the horizon, casting an amber glow across the waves, seek shelter and community at our favourite seaside sanctuaries.

Watch the skies with a warm cup or a cool glass in hand:🌊 Roker Pier – Walk the stone path into the heart of the shadow.

🏨 The Roker Hotel – A historic coastal sentinel offering grand, sweeping views of the darkening horizon.

☕ FAUSTO COFFEE – Keeping the lights burning until 10:30 PM.

🍳 – Where the tide meets the twilight until 10:00 PM.

🍸 Tin of Sardines Roker – Toast to the cosmos by the pier until 9:30 PM.

☕ – A cozy, welcoming beachfront haven serving up warm brews under the fading sun.

Nobody should have to spend an evening alone.

This Monday, Poetic License is hosting Empty Chairs – a welcoming community initiative where anyone can come along for a chat and some company.

Whether you've recently moved to the area, fancy meeting new people, or simply don't want to spend the evening on your own, you'll be made very welcome.

There's no pressure, no agenda and no expectation – just a friendly conversation over a drink in a relaxed setting.

Cliffe Park, Roker, gets ready to party as Sunderland's Summer Streets Festival takes place on Saturday July 4 and Sunday July 5 2026 , bringing free live music, arts, workshops and community activity to the seafront.

Now in its 12th year, the festival has grown into one of Sunderland's most recognisable grassroots cultural events , blending nationally known artists with emerging regional talent, outdoor arts, workshops and youth performance opportunities. It's been described as the "UK's most beautiful festival" thanks to its scenic seafront setting.

Organised by The Futureheads' Ross Millard, the event brings three music stages across the weekend , plus tents and tipis scattered around the park hosting crafts, workshops and community-led sessions. Main stage hosts for 2026 are former BBC anchor Jeff Brown on Saturday, and Frankie Francis of Frankie & The Heartstrings on Sunday.

Saturday's main stage line-up includes Martin McAloon of Prefab Sprout, Jamagotchi and Amateur Ornithologist, while Cortney Dixon returns by popular demand to the main stage on Sunday.

Entry is free — grab the stage times and head down to Roker for a weekend of North East culture.

Happy Birthday Newcastle 144 years old today!

It is 144 years today since Newcastle was granted city status.
Why only 144 years ago? Becoming a city was more to do with having its own diocese than the actual size or power of the settlement itself.
Newcastle was a global powerhouse and didn’t really need ‘city’ status. In 1882 Queen Victoria created the Diocese of Newcastle and St Nicholas’s Church got an upgrade to Cathedral.
And as it’s really a relatively new city the well known reference ‘the toon’ still remains.
