The 12 Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition Finalists have been chosen, and I am 1 of them!

"This year’s competition introduces two categories for entry: category 1 for 2nd and 3rd year students, and category 2 for Master’s students. A total of 12 places are available, with participants required to hand draw their designs to specific briefs during the two day event at the Southampton International Boat Show in September."

I will be competing in the 2024 Superyacht UK Young Designers Competition at the Southampton International Boat Show this September!

The List of Designers is out and here is my profile;

Oliver is a recently graduated Automotive and Transport Design student from UWTSD Swansea College of Art.

Always being interested in the creative process, his passion resides with fast cars and impressive yachts, all in his strive for true bespoke design and innovation.

His degree has been a checkpoint in a journey he has been on since as early as he can remember. From Lego to CAD, developing his skills and chasing experiences. The Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition is the next challenge Oliver is looking forward to undertaking.

Throughout my final year, the studio space allocated to my course was essential. What started as an empty desk, ended up as my second home.

My colleagues and I sat in the studio, day in and day out, developing our ideas and learning from eachother.

Our desk spaces developed aswell, as we shared music, equipment, and consumed large amounts of coffee. The best thing was that at the end of the day, we could leave all our work at our desks, ready for us to jump back in the next day.

An experience I will never regret nor forget.

The Final Major Project spanned the whole of my final year at University.

The project involved expansive research into where that yacht industry is going, what clients are after and related innovations. Subsequently, the concept design progression was a response to knowledge and ideas developed through research.

I accumulated my project into three printed magazines;

001 Research
002 Design
003 Technical

The 1:60 scale model of Concept Far was the initial driving force of interest. It played a heavy role in choosing to study at UWTSD, with a similar force of interest to visitors.

Seeing the concept in real physical 3D helps grasp the surfaces and shapes chosen and allows me to fully emphasize my ideas.

The motivation to progress a project is always helped by a physical response. From choosing materials to creating an accurate CAD model, the Physical piece was always the end marker.

The only next step; See if the model floats

The UWTSD Automotive and Transport Design Degree Show 2024 was the opportunity for my classmates and I to showcase our year-long projects.

I was lucky enough to realise my design through a 1:60 scale model, 3D Printed using my CAD model and finished by hand.
The complete in-house manufacturer allowed me to understand more processes that may be overlooked in a design process.

Above all else the model was eye-catching and helped promote my concept to visitors.
