🌑️ 35°C Outside. Plenty Of Value Inside.

Whilst a few members understandably surrendered to the heatwave, those who made it to Hive Networking this week were rewarded with a fantastic morning of learning, conversation and collaboration.

Huge thanks to John Royce for stepping in to facilitate.

We heard from:

🏑 Bob Tiley on mortgages and lender options

πŸ’· Jerry Riches on business funding and growth finance

πŸŽ“ Richard Churchill on how better 121 meetings create stronger referral partnerships

Networking is always about the people, and this week was another great example of business owners supporting one another despite the weather.

Also, the committee may need to investigate whether Hawaiian shirts are now officially business attire. πŸŒΊπŸ˜‚

Every other Wednesday, before the sun has properly made up its mind, while Bristol still lies half-dreaming under its blankets, a quiet enchantment gathers around a breakfast table.

They come from all corners of the city. A mortgage broker. An insurance man. An accountant who, against all the rules of his kind, deals in good news more often than bad. And β€” this being the sort of table it is β€” a fellow who came not as himself at all, but in another man's stead, to tell the tale of classic cars sent out to weddings and, when the day turned solemn, to funerals. For that is one of the gentlest customs of this place: that sometimes a soul will rise and carry a friend's story for him, so that no tale need go untold simply because its owner was otherwise engaged in travels or so deep in the business they just couldn't leave.

One by one, they stand. And one by one, they begin.

Antony, a master printer, leaned in as men do when they mean to share a secret. A flyer, he whispered, holds no magic of its own. Left alone, it lies in a drawer and forgets what it was made for. But breathe a purpose into it β€” a reason, a voice, a knock upon a door β€” and that same humble scrap of paper will stir, and rise, and slip out into the world to find the very people who need it. The print, he said, was never the magic. The purpose was.

Then Kev took the floor β€” an IT man with seven-and-thirty winters behind him β€” and spoke of a curse that creeps through many a business unseen. They long for swifter waters, he said, and pour their gold into a great rushing river of speed, only to find nothing flows any faster than before. For the gremlin who slowed them was never in the river at all. He had been crouching inside the castle walls the whole time β€” in the tired old wiring, the weary box in the cupboard no one thought to look upon. A kingdom, he warned, is only ever as swift as its slowest hidden thing.

And around the table the others added their chapters. Bob told of placing keys into the hands of folk who believed the door would never open for them. Barry told of a family who fed a few small coins into a quiet promise β€” and how, when the dark clouds finally rolled in, that promise gave back three hundred and ten thousand pounds, precisely when it was needed and not a day late. And Steve, an accountant, told the strangest tale of all: of a man who shuffled in certain he was ruined, braced for the worst, until Steve followed the numbers like footprints in snow and looked up to say, *you are not lost at all. You have been winning all this while β€” and no one ever thought to tell you.*

And so it went, story passing to story, warm and unhurried, like bread shared down the table.

Then, as the plates were being gathered, came the finest tale of all.

Tony rose β€” not to speak of his trade, but of why any of this matters. Once, he said, one-and-forty years ago, a young man stood in a crowd and watched his most beloved band fill a hall with thunder. A single evening. A single memory. The kind of thing that ought to end right there β€” and very nearly always does.

But this one did not.

For four decades on, by a path no map could have foretold β€” a friendship here, a word there, a chance meeting that had no business happening β€” that young man's own son now stands at the band's side, ready to walk out on tour beside them come October.

For a moment, the whole room held its breath.

And that is why they keep returning, fortnight after fortnight. Not for the warmth of the eggs. But for the stubborn magic Tony left hanging in the air β€” that a single story, told at the right table on the right grey morning, has a quiet habit of becoming a chapter no one saw coming.

There are six-and-twenty souls around that table now. And this year, there is room for a few more.

Hive Networking β€” every fortnight, in Bristol.
