What 20+ Years in Marketing Has Taught Me About What Actually Works
After more than two decades working across marketing, design, content creation and customer-facing businesses, I’ve seen trends come and go.
Platforms change. Algorithms change. Buzzwords change.
But the fundamentals of what actually works in marketing have remained remarkably consistent.
Here are a few lessons experience has taught me:
1. Clarity Beats Cleverness
Many businesses try to sound impressive rather than understandable.
Customers don’t buy because something sounds clever. They buy because they quickly understand:
what you offer
why it matters
why they should trust you
Simple, clear messaging consistently outperforms overcomplicated marketing.
2. Consistency Builds Trust
Too many businesses treat marketing as bursts of activity followed by silence.
Strong brands show up consistently.
That means consistent:
visuals
tone of voice
customer experience
communication
Trust is often built through repetition.
3. Great Content Still Matters
No amount of tactics can fully compensate for poor content.
Strong photography, video, design and copy still make a huge difference in how a business is perceived.
Customers judge quality quickly.
Good content creates confidence.
4. Marketing Must Support Commercial Goals
Likes and views can be useful, but they are not the end goal.
Real marketing should support outcomes such as:
enquiries
bookings
footfall
retention
revenue growth
Vanity metrics alone don’t pay the bills.
5. Relationships Still Win
Technology evolves, but people still buy from people they trust.
Responsiveness, professionalism, warmth and reliability remain powerful competitive advantages.
Final Thought
The tools available to marketers today are better than ever.
But success still comes from understanding people, communicating clearly and showing up consistently.
That was true 20 years ago.
It’s still true now.
