I can pretty much guarantee that whenever I look at a website of a garden or interior designer I’ll see an ‘our process’ page rather than services pages.

Please tell me they are not teaching this on design courses in business modules?

When we dig a little deeper, usually people structure their sites like the big names do. They think because they are successful they should emulate them and that it’s correct.

But, guess what? People who want to work with a big name will type it into google and find them because they have seen them in a magazine or on tv or a book.

You can’t our process an established studio and no one is going to book you when you’re sharing your process is the same as everyone else.

I’m yet to see the process different from studio to studio because everyone follows the same stages.

Read the caption to see what you should be doing on your website.

Let me know if you’ve got a process page and why you use one, I’d love to know!

Based on Cranbrook in Kent, Greenwild is a garden design and build studio run by a husband and wife team.

This is the third branding project I’ve had the privilege of working on for a Cranbrook brand. Previously working on a fashion boutique, a children’s play café and now a garden studio.

I absolutely love this project and can’t wait to finish the website. Hilary sent me through the copy yesterday which I applied to the wireframe. The images are already inserted and now I can assemble it on the platform.

For any of you wondering how we approach projects:

1 strategy of brand and articulation
2 brand design
3 website master plan (wireframe)
4 art direction for photography and commission copy
5 add photos and copy into wireframe
6 build website
7 training and handover
8 asset production and stationery design
9 SEO and content marketing
10 ongoing ad hoc web and brand support

If you have any questions, I’d love to chat about projects. Pop a question in the comments and we can answer them.

In December we had a call from Ed and Lucy from Greenwild. They’d had a false start with their branding project and found us online. After a quick call we sent over our services guide and we took it from there.

We started work on the identity in January followed by the art direction for their photo shoot with Jade. As Hilary works her magic on their copy as we speak I’m about to create their website, ready for launch next month.

Their stationery and a number of client documents are also getting the Wildings treatment 🫶

What I’ve loved is that Ed and Lucy are from a little part of Kent that I grew up in. They work into lots of the towns and villages I know so well and as I’ve been working on their website and crafting pages I’ve had a bit of a nostalgia trip down memory lane.

Growing up surrounded by orchards, hop fields, meadows, woodland and beautiful countryside I know that my childhood and teenage years were truly idyllic and I’ve found myself missing living in the garden of England.

I’m so glad that Ed and Lucy entrusted their brand to me and that we were able to create something magical for them.

The secret to a premium brand? Stop trying to look expensive. Start trying to feel intentional.

We see it all the time — businesses have their logo, their fonts, their colours and expensive photography… But still things don’t land.

Why? Because premium isn’t a collection of assets. It’s a feeling of coherence, care and confidence that runs through everything.

The brands that command the highest fees aren’t always the most elaborate. They’re the most considered.

At Wildings, we believe beauty and function should co-exist — that a brand should work seamlessly across everything you do, from identity to digital presence and feel like an effortless extension of who you are.

Here are 4 things that make the difference between looking premium and feeling it (swipe through).

One of the nicest things about updating our website has been revisiting projects and updating the visuals like this beautiful project for Abigail Reay Interior Design.

Abby’s business recently turned 5 and when we launched her website she had one project to share. Now she has a portfolio full of swoon worthy imagery and some incredible projects.

I’ve really enjoyed going back and updating the visuals in our portfolio and pairing them with her studio imagery

Congratulations on turning 5

We’re currently accepting new projects from May/June depending on what you’re after.

People always think our studio is a big outfit. But it’s just two of us beavering away with the odd collaborator brought in when necessary.

So why is that?

For me, it’s because we’ve built a brand, something that feels tangible and connects with those who’ve discovered us. It’s more than just two people showing up as freelancers. It has more substance, something behind us, it has an identity that supports us, makes us visible and (hopefully) respected.

If your branding is holding you back, is time to raise the standard of what’s possible?

Booking branding and website projects for May and beyond

It’s a funny old time at the moment. I find myself increasingly anxious in a world that feels heavy, less safe, less certain. The weekend’s global events (after what feels like many months if not years of hostility and horror) make holding onto hope a challenge at times.

My grandmother’s husband of over 35 years died this morning after a decline in his health after a recent fall and an ongoing battle with cancer and dementia.

Over the weekend as I was reflecting on his life, my grandmother’s great loss and what it is to say goodbye, this quote came to mind:

“Life is understood backwards and lived forwards”

It’s by a 19th Century Danish philosopher called Søren Kierkegaard.

The nature of life forces us to live first and understand later, but it’s only when we reflect and join the dots that we can understand the significance of our experiences.

Holding onto hope, and seeking out joy this week, and whatever your circumstances, I pray that for you too.

Spotted any design crimes recently?

You can have beautiful branding and still easily fall into the trap of making some accidental mistakes when implementing things yourself that will impact how your brand appears. Things will feel off but you might not be able to put your finger on it…

Here’s a few things that I regularly notice:

1. Lack of white space and cramming too much onto a page rather than reducing content
2. Spacing (kerning) on sentence case headings and paragraphs - it’s too hard to read and looks messy
3. Lack of hierarchy and legibility
4. Low contrast

Have you spotted any recently?
