This quote has resinated tremendously with me, especially as my business is a personal brand (where you create a brand around a person rather than a business).

I pride myself on being approachable, supportive and creative personally but also professionally. These are my brand values (the beliefs that you, as a business, stand for). I aim to communicate these within my business whether I'm talking to a client, writing copy for my website or sending an email. It's just who I am and this matters most to customers and clients because they like authenticity.

So, do you know your brand values? If not, stop, reflect and write down what comes to mind.

How would you describe yourself? Are you a serious person? Do you have a quirky personality? Are you spiritual? Do you have a bubbly, warm presence? Are you into technology or more traditional? Do you have a desire to constantly learn? If you're struggling, ask friends or even past clients to describe you or what it was like working with you.

If your brand isn't personal then imagine your business as a person. What would they be like? How would they act? Reflect on this and you may just find what your brand values are. This can then inform your messaging, tone of voice and contribute to you brand identity. As a result, your brand will become consistent and that leads to brand authenticity, building customer or clients' trust and loyalty.

Recently started working with Sue from Your Nutrition and on my visit today her new business cards arrived. I've taken her existing logo and applied the brand to a new business card design as well as other business stationery so you'll see more of what I've been working on soon 🍏

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRAND, BRANDING AND BRAND IDENTITY?

Your brand, branding and brand identity is all about your business' image...

A brand is made up of name, tagline, logo or symbol, design, voice and the overall experience when interacting with the business. For example, the most famous brand, Apple, is known for its logo: a simple apple shape with a bite taken out of it. This simplicity is continued with their tone of voice and the fact they don't use a lot of words. Their tagline is 'Think Different' and the overall experience of the brand is consistent with the products themselves being simple to use.

Branding is the name given to the process of applying your brand to your business so people can identify you and separate you from other businesses. For example, putting your logo, tagline and design onto packaging or website. As well as writing copy that matches your tone of voice. To use Apple as an example again, you identify their products by the presence of the apple symbol but you also identify other products simply by the presence of the lowercase 'i' infront of the product name such as iPad, iMac etc.

Brand identity usually communicates how you wish your business to be perceived. It incorporates your brand and branding as well as the intangibles like your purpose, values, personality, messaging and strategy. To use Apple again, they identify as an emotional brand focusing on innovation and imagination with the latest technology. They have a massive following with many customers needing the latest products when released so they can be seen as trendy and up together with the latest must-haves. Therefore creating an image and lifestyle that customers want to obtain.

I've aptly depicted all of these elements with this graphic because branding is as much about what you can see as it is about what you can't! Had you considered all of these when it comes to your business?

A little from Marie Forleo

Success doesn't come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently

So no matter what you do with regards to marketing your small business, as long as you are consistent, you're making progress. If you only have the time to post on social media once a week; then great! If you can publish a blog post once a month; fantastic! If you send a newsletter once a quarter; brilliant!

It's better to be a steady presence than have a sporadic appearance.

Marketing is the action of promoting and selling products or services.

As a small business you wear many hats and so it can be hard keeping track of everything while ensuring clarity and consistency.

A little focus can help considerably and one way to do this is using the 7Ps model. The result? This will help you to position your product clearly in the minds of your customers.

But, what are the 7Ps?

1. Product: what do you offer?

Describe its functionality, appearance, availability, features, guarantees

2. Price: how much does it cost?

What’s the list price? Do you offer discounts (e.g., early bird offer)? What are your payment options? Do you offer finance options or is it payment in full? Do you require a deposit? Do you offer free or value-added elements?

3. Place: where and through what channels can it be bought?

Name the locations where your product can be found. Do you have distributors or an online shop? Do you sell via retailers or have your own shop? Do you do markets or trade exhibitions? How is your product stored or transported?

4. Promotion: how do you communicate your product to your audience?

What tactics do you use to promote your product, for example, advertising, personal selling, public relations, direct marketing and/or digital marketing?

5. People: who and how do you deliver your product?

What’s your pre-sales/after sales support like? Do you provide customer support? Do you have employees? Do you undertake training, if so, what? What’s your business’ culture, purpose and values?

6. Process: what are the actions involved to deliver your product to your audience?

How do you monitor and check for quality assurance? How do you process feedback? Do you conduct research and development for new products? What IT systems do you use? What’s the design process? What’s your customer journey?

7. Physical Evidence: what are the tangible elements and environment of your product

Consider the product itself and its packaging. As well as the promotional physical aspects such as signage, leaflets, flyers, business cards, equipment etc.

Have you identified your 7Ps? Would you like some help? Get in touch 🌼

HAPPY MONDAY! 🌼 This week's quote reminds us to focus on what we are doing rather than looking at others.

Whilst it is beneficial to do competitor analysis, remember you want to differentiate your business from others so you stand out.

Do you know what your unique selling point (USP) is and are you communicating it to your customers?

Hello everybody! 👋

It's been a while so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Hannah, a freelance Marketing Consultant based in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

I help small businesses bloom by providing marketing support services but am often asked what marketing is.

Essentially, marketing is the name of the actions you take to promote your business. It's what you do to attract an audience to your business' offering, whether it be a product, service or both. You’re most likely already marketing your business without even knowing it! However, most see marketing just as advertising, yet there is so much more to it!

Imagine your business is a plant. Marketing is one stem of your plant. Advertising is actually one of the many buds on the stem. Other buds might be personal communications, sales promotion, public relations, personal selling and so on. Then there would be the roots that provide the foundations of your business such as market research, product development, product distribution, strategy, customer support, reputation management etc. A consistent and integrated approach to your marketing means your plant will flourish and grow.

That’s where I come in. I can help your business grow. Your business may be a brand new seedling in need of setting down roots or established in need of some pruning to help bring the buds to fruition. Either way, I can help!
