Secret Truro is a blog which supports local independent retailers, businesses and farmers. This is a friendly site and any abusive language or vexatious posting will be taken down immediately. We love a bit of banter, and it's ok to disagree, but please don't cross the line. I'm all for free speech and I know there's often passion on both sides of an argument, but this page isn't the place - there are other forums better suited to this kind of debate.

The bright yellow door of Mansion House is hard to miss, but do you know the fascinating history behind this former family residence? ๐Ÿค”

Built in 1759 from elegant Bath stone, Mansion House once offered sweeping views of the river, back when the water reached all the way up to Lemon Quay ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

This building was designed by the same architect who created Princeโ€™s House (located just down the street), which was built 20 years later.

After the death of William Lemon, his clerk, Thomas Daniell, acquired his mining/merchant interests and became exceedingly wealthy. In 1754, Thomas married Elizabeth Elliot, the niece and heir of Ralph Allen โ€“ a Cornishman who revolutionised the Post Office & settled in Bath. Allen owned Coombe Down Quarry, and as a wedding present to the couple, he gifted them stone from the quarry to build their home.

The construction of this impressive property took 7 years and cost ยฃ8,500 (approximately ยฃ1.5 million today!) ๐Ÿ’ฐ

On your next visit to Truro, take a moment to admire the house and keep a lookout for other buildings which use Bath stone across the city (hint - head to Lemon Street!) ๐Ÿ“Œ
