GCSE & A LEVEL MARKING SEASON…

This week I’m busy marking GCSE and A Level Russian exam papers, with the final deadline just around the corner. It’s always a privilege to see first-hand what distinguishes an A* script from the rest.

In Russia, we have a curious tradition: celebrating the Old New Year 🎄
It falls on 13–14 January and comes from the time when Russia followed the Julian calendar, which is now 13 days behind the Gregorian one used in the UK and most of the world.

Although it’s no longer an official holiday, many families still mark it quietly — with a small gathering, good food, and warm wishes. It’s less formal, more relaxed, and very much about togetherness.

These flowers were a lovely gift from my students as we had a little Old New Year celebration together here in Cornwall!
A small moment of Russian culture far from home — and a reminder that language is always tied to history, traditions, and people.

Dear all,

Congratulations to you — and to the people around you who quietly made this possible. Learning something new never happens in isolation. It happens alongside family life, work, tired evenings, encouragement, patience, and sometimes simply giving someone the space and time to learn.

To parents, partners, and loved ones: thank you for your support, understanding, and interest. Your presence matters more than you may realise.

To my students: I hope Russian becomes something that gently enriches your life — a skill you can return to with confidence, curiosity, and pleasure, whenever you choose. Not a burden, not a race, but something that belongs to you.

It has been a privilege to work with you all. I wish you warmth, balance, and joy in everything you are learning — in languages and far beyond them.
