📱 Quishing – The QR Code Scam You Might Not See Coming

You’ve probably scanned a QR code recently — maybe to check a menu, download an app, or make a payment.

But did you know QR codes can be used by scammers too?

Quishing (QR phishing) is a fast-growing scam where fraudsters create fake QR codes that direct you to malicious websites. These pages are designed to steal your login details, install malware, or trick you into making a payment.

🚨 The problem? QR codes don’t show you where they lead until it’s too late.

🧾 These scams might appear:

On fake delivery slips or letters

In phishing emails or texts

On posters or stickers (sometimes placed over genuine QR codes)

💡 Tips to stay safe:

Be cautious of QR codes in unsolicited messages or unfamiliar places

After scanning, always check the website address carefully — does it look legitimate? Is it the exact domain you expect?

Never enter login or payment details unless you're sure the site is genuine

For businesses: regularly check marketing posters in public places or signs outside your premises haven’t had fake QR stickers placed over them

Use a QR scanner app that previews the link before opening

QR codes are useful — but just like with links and attachments, a healthy dose of caution goes a long way.

🚨 Watch Out for Fake Google Reviews

Received a strange 1-star review from someone you’ve never dealt with? You’re not alone — fake reviews are an increasing issue for small businesses.

Sometimes these are left maliciously by competitors, bots, or even companies who then offer to “remove” the review — for a fee. That’s a scam in itself.

📌 The good news? Google allows you to report reviews that go against their policies — including fake content, spam, or conflicts of interest.

✅ Tips for dealing with suspicious reviews:

Check the reviewer’s profile — do they seem legitimate? If not then report the review through your Google Business Profile

If you don’t recognise them, avoid responding emotionally. Keep any responses calm, professional, and factual. A polite and measured reply shows potential customers that you take feedback seriously and act professionally — even when the review might not be genuine.

🚨 Scam emails are getting sneakier — and more dangerous. They often look like they’re from trusted sources such as your hosting provider, domain registrar, bank, or even Google.

But one wrong click can do real damage: ❗ You could be tricked into handing over login details ❗ Or worse — clicking a link could download a virus or malware to your device

🔍 Watch for:

Suspicious or misspelled email addresses

Generic greetings like “Dear customer”

Urgent demands like “Your account will be deleted”

Unfamiliar links or attachments

✅ Tip: Never click links or download files from emails you're unsure about.
If you are a client of Acorn Web Design, and are unsure if an email is legit, just forward anything suspicious onto us and we’ll happily check it for you.

🔐 Stay safe online — and know we’ve got your back.
