There are fundamental checks that should always be carried out when running ads.
When auditing ad accounts and campaigns, I’m often surprised by how frequently the basics are overlooked.

Some of the most common issues I come across include:

✅ Multiple overlapping ads driving up costs
✅ No Ad Account created - running ads through an agency account or personal account
✅ No pixel attached
✅ Pixel not firing correctly
✅ Incorrect campaign objective
✅ Broad match keywords in Google Ads attracting irrelevant traffic and wasting budget
✅ Poor ad strength (Google)
✅ Outdated or irrelevant ad copy (I saw one last week still mentioning "coming up in 2024")
✅ Google Tag requiring attention

Each of these issues leads to wasted spend.

Running ads isn’t a quick or passive process. It takes ongoing management and strategy. Given that it’s my full-time job, that should tell you how much time and attention campaigns really need!

Almost every conversation I have with potential new clients starts with "I would like to run ### Ads".

When I ask why they have chosen that platform for their Ads, they very rarely can answer.
The truth is, it is usually because "someone" has told the they should, or they have seen their friends/colleagues/competitors doing them and feel they should too. But this is not how a Paid Ads strategy is created.

The point is - you don’t need to have the answers! 💥

How do you define success for a lead generation campaign? 🤔

As someone who runs ad campaigns regularly, I’ve found that defining success in lead generation can be tricky. Unlike e-commerce campaigns where metrics like ROAS clearly show profitability—lead generation is harder to define.

When setting up a campaign, we tell platforms like Google or Meta what our goal is. Once the ads run, we analyse the conversions. But is that number telling the whole story? Not always.

Here’s why: lead generation is a multi-step process. My role as an ad specialist is to create campaigns that attract and engage the right audience—those who are most likely to need my client's services.

This could involve filling out a form on a website or on Meta. However, not all completed forms result in quality leads, and that's where it gets complex.

It isn't usually down to the way the Ad is set up.

Other things to consider:

• Are the ads clearly communicating the offer?
• Is the budget sufficient to reach the right audience?
• Is the goal set up correctly?
• Does the landing page encourage users to complete the desired action?
• Are the contact forms designed to attract the right leads?

Lead generation campaigns require a deep dive into these factors to refine strategies and improve outcomes.

My job is to look over every part of this process—targeting, ad creatives, budgets, and goals—so the campaign has the best chance of success.

If money was no object….

When a client comes to me, tells me their goals, and asks for a proposal and campaign strategy, I always include three suggestions of packages .
One of these packages is always the “ money is no object” suggestion which is rarely the case, but usually the most likely to succeed.

The concept of all of these “ideal scenario” packages is the same.

1. Google ad campaign to take advantage of those who are searching for your top keywords which relate to your business and the services or products that you offer.
2. Retargeting campaign via Meta showing an ad to all those who have been onto the website; this will remind those who have been onto your website via the Google ad of what they had been searching for, while they are scrolling on Facebook or Instagram.
3. Meta Ad campaign to provide website traffic to those who are interested in the business. This will also increase the number of visitors to your website and the retargeting campaign in the previous point will have more numbers in it to share the specific information.
4. Evergreen Ad campaign always running at a low-cost targeting those new people who may come within your target audience.

Every campaign for every business and goal should be poke to the outcome required, however concentrating on one platform does not allow you to reach your full potential with your ads.

That’s a HUGE amount of potential customers who need to be nurtured through the process.

Many businesses get them to their website and that’s the end.

You need to retarget those website visitors to remind them what they were looking at and about who you are.

Your website is not likely to be the only website they have visited as part of their research.
How are you going to be remembered when they are ready to buy?

Easy - they don't need to remember you. You set up a retargeting Ad campaign which targets those who have already been on your website.

Don't rely on them to come back to your website. Use another platform to remind them about what you offer 💡
