Branding is so much more than a slick logo. Here are our top tips on branding for small businesses….
1. When you think of your business and brand, think of it as a person. Your brand should have a personality and identity. Think about your values and goals and your target audience. How will your brand 'speak' to these people? Does your business have a story behind it or a product offering that is unique and helps you stand out? What is your brand mission? How do you want your customers to remember you? The purpose of branding is to create relationships with your customers, and the easiest way to do this is to treat your brand as a person.
2. Be Consistent. Inconsistency can confuse your audience and undermine your brand. Highly recognisable brands prioritise consistency across all mediums and platforms. To help create consistency you can create a set of brand guidelines which will become your brand bible. These will help new employees or partners understand who your brand is, and how they should treat it.
3. Your brand's visual identity is easily the most recognisable thing about your business and can have an impact on your reputation as well. When looking at this element that covers logo, design, font, photography, color palettes, visual style, website, social media content, and business cards to name a few, consider what your competitors look like, but be wary. Don't let your inspiration turn to imitation.
4. Differentiate. Impactful branding will stand out to consumers. If all your competitors have blue logos, it goes without saying you should choose something that stands out against them. Figure out what makes your company different, sets you apart and use that in your branding strategy. More importantly than design and logos do you have a service sets you apart from your competitors? What makes you different - this is your unique selling point (USP) and superpower.
