This week's Cloud Of Dust: Re-Imagined single release is The Tarot Pack.

The Tarot Pack was the first Cloud Of Dust song to feature Nic Wilson-Smith. A friend and fellow science-fiction role-player, Nic wanted to become involved with the project, and he and Andy co-wrote the song using Andy's pack of tarot cards as inspiration.

"I used the VL-Tone to create a clean synth sound which, as with several other songs, was a saxophone in my imagination," recalls Andy. "When I came to re-imagine the track, I knew I wanted to replace that sound with a much more realistic saxophone."

The version presented here is actually a second re-imagining. "As Suno improved, I felt the song deserved another attempt. It has always been a favourite of mine, but the first re-imagining was imperfect."

The result gives The Tarot Pack a richer, more polished sound while remaining faithful to the atmosphere and melody of the original recording.

This week’s Cloud Of Dust: Re-Imagined release is One Way Man.

For this track, Andy returned to the classic percussion sounds of the Casio MT-70.

“The tempo and rhythm I wanted weren’t available on the recorded drum tape, so I used the Casio for the additional flexibility,” he recalls.

The meaning of One Way Man is deliberately open to interpretation. “I see it as being about a man who appears to have a single direction in life, but is actually having an extramarital affair,” Andy explains. “However, listeners may imagine other scenarios.”

The original recording had a dreamlike quality that Andy was determined to preserve in the Suno re-imagining. Although the new version retains much of that atmosphere, it was unable to recreate the haunting original ending, in which Andy’s whispered vocals gradually fade away.

“As Suno improves, I may attempt another re-imagining to capture that ending more faithfully.”

Nevertheless, One Way Man remains a strong addition to the Cloud Of Dust repertoire.
