✨ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ✨ Philipa Batty ✨
Picture the moment - I was dancing around my kitchen to “Make your own kind of music”, whilst completing a painting exercise from an online art course and I was having a ball. I cried when the music stopped, in that moment, I knew I had found what I needed to do, I needed more art making in my life. The idea for www.mykinda.art was born.
Encouraged to stick with more academic subjects at school, I went to university to complete a Nursing degree. I've always had creative pastimes - making clothes, home furnishings, sugar craft and watercolours.
I retrained as an Alexander technique (AT) teacher, after years in the NHS and education. A friend came to me for AT lessons. She told me about art classes she was setting up, and I went along to find out about expressive intuitive painting, mixed media and acrylic - which I knew nothing about at the time. It blew my mind!
By 2019 I entered my first juried show and was accepted. Sadly, it also coincided with a cancer diagnosis. I’ve continued to paint, learn and teach AT. In 2021, my art became a bigger, necessary, and more public part of my life. I've been accepted in more juried shows, I’ve shared more on social media and have now sold locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Peacock Art Trail 2023, another pivotal moment - I met lovely visitors alongside friendly and talented artists from the Corsham area; but I also found out about the submission event at Corsham gallery and a vacant studio space. Now in 2024, in my new space, I have created my latest collection. It will be in the window at called “Still Alive”. 1st- 15th May and will include abstracts, florals and quirky still life paintings.
My pieces convey how I am in the moment and what I’m curious about. I produce my kind of art (www.mykinda.art).
