Children on Ward 25 were treated to a very special visit as writer and editor Liz Carney-Marsh spent time with young patients, handing out copies of her first book and sharing her passion for storytelling.

Nottinghamshire-based Liz wrote poems for Back of the Net, a children’s poetry collection about football that also includes work by Michael Rosen and Paul Cookson.

The visit created a real buzz on the ward at King's Mill Hospital, with children and families enjoying the opportunity to meet the author in person and receive a copy of the book to keep.

As a child, Liz spent a lot of time in hospitals including King’s Mill Hospital. At Harlow Wood orthopaedic hospital, Liz wrote poetry every day to lift the spirits of older patients.

The book’s publisher Award Publications gave each of the 11 poets involved free books to give away as part of the Year of Reading’s Go All In campaign. With the World Cup also underway, it was perfect timing for Liz who said she was keen to ‘give a something back and make the day a little brighter for patients’.

Liz took time to speak to patients and their families and her visit helped to provide distraction and comfort to those currently receiving care.

Colleagues in the Play team on Ward 25 were delighted to support the visit, which forms part of efforts to enhance patient experience and wellbeing – particularly for our younger patients.

A big thank you to Liz for her generosity and kindness in taking the time to visit, and to the Ward 25 team for helping to make the day such a success.

Let’s hope England (or whichever team you are supporting in the World Cup) put some goals in the…Back of the Net!
