Ever had an email or a cold call promising to get your business to the "Number 1 spot on Google"?

It sounds tempting, but it should ring some serious alarm bells. 🚨

No one owns Google search results. Not us, not that agency in your inbox, and certainly not the person calling you from a withheld number.

Because no one owns it, no one can 100% guarantee a top spot.

When someone makes that promise, they are usually:

1. Using dodgy "black hat" tricks that might work for a week before Google bans your site entirely.
2. Bidding on your own business name (which you should already rank for anyway).
3. Targeting "easy" keywords that no one is actually searching for.

Real SEO isn't about magic tricks or overnight wins. It’s steady work that builds trust with Google over time.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

It's surprising how many small business owners think they have to swap their personality for "marketing jargon" as soon as they write their website or an email. They think "professional" means being stiff, formal, and: let’s be honest: a bit boring.

But here's a truth: Professionalism doesn't mean big words. It’s about being:

- Reliable.
- Clear about your prices.
- Great at what you do.
- Easy to talk to.

You don’t need to use words like “synergy” or “leverage” to prove you’re the best at what you do. In fact, most customers find corporate-speak confusing and a bit suspicious.

People buy from people. They want to know they’re dealing with a human being who cares about the job, not a faceless corporation.

So, don’t be afraid to show a bit of personality. It’s usually the reason people chose you over the big guys in the first place.

Keep it real. Keep it professional. But definitely don’t keep it boring.

Feeling guilty because you haven't posted on social media today?

Don’t be.

Most small business owners are told they need to post every single day to stay 'relevant'.

But here’s the reality: if you’re posting just to tick a box, the quality is unlikely to be there.

One great bit of advice or a photo of a job well done beats 'Happy World Otter Day', (unless you're a conservationist 🦦)

Focus on value, not volume. Your sanity (and your followers) will thank you.

Ever sat through a marketing meeting and felt like you needed a translator? đź«

"Synergy," "holistic conversion pathways," "leveraging multi-channel touchpoints." Honestly, if we spoke like that to our local butcher or plumber, they’d probably (rightly) show us the door.

We built Virens because we were tired of seeing small businesses get buried under agency jargon and reports that don't actually tell you anything.

You’re busy. You’re handling sales, admin, and customer service. You don't have time to decode buzzwords. You just want to know:

1. Will this get me more enquiries?
2. Is it worth the money?
3. What’s actually happening?

We promise honest, practical marketing that makes small businesses bigger.

Fed up with the marketing BS? Let’s have a chat.

A fake Google review is gutting. You’ve worked hard for your reputation, and then someone you’ve never even met drops a 1-star gr***de.

Your first instinct might be to fire back or panic. Don’t do either.

Google has a clear process for reporting reviews that break their rules. If the reviewer was never a customer, or if it’s part of a coordinated attack, you can often get it removed.

Here is what to do right now:
âś… Screenshot everything: Grab the review and any messages immediately.
âś… Stay calm: Do not post an angry reply. It usually makes things worse.
âś… Report it properly: Use the correct Google reporting route.
âś… Do not pay: Never pay scammers promising to 'fix' it for a fee.

We’ve helped plenty of UK businesses clear up their profiles, with a 72% success rate within 28 days for policy-breaking reviews.

It takes a bit of patience, but you don't have to just sit there and take it.

Want a second pair of eyes on a suspicious review? We can help.

You don't need a 50-page marketing strategy or a website that wins design awards to grow your business.

In fact, waiting for 'perfect' is often why marketing never gets done at all.

Your customers won’t lose sleep if your logo is a slightly different shade of blue than it was 2 years ago. They want you to be easy to find, clear about what you do, and quick to respond.

A clear, well structured website that works on a phone beats a 'revolutionary' one that’s still 6 months away from launching 🫠

Clear beats clever.
Helpful beats flashy.
Consistent beats perfect.

If you've been putting off your marketing because it feels too complicated, just start with one small thing today. Update your Google Business Profile, or fix that one typo on your homepage.

Done is much better than perfect.

Is your mobile number putting off potential customers?

If you’re a local trade or a small business owner, your mobile is your lifeline. It’s in your pocket while you’re on-site, in the van, or grabbing a quick coffee between jobs.

But here’s the thing: for many business types, customers still see a mobile number as a bit 'temporary'.

Adding a local landline number: even a virtual one that rings straight to your mobile: is a massive trust signal. It says:

- We’re established.
- We’re local to you.
- We aren't going anywhere.

It’s a simple, low-cost way to make your business look more professional without actually having to sit at a desk. It's about giving your customers that extra bit of confidence to pick up the phone and dial.

Do you use a landline or stick to the mobile? Let us know in the comments.

"Can I just use Facebook?" 🤔

We get asked this a lot. And look, social media is brilliant for showing off your latest work or chatting in local community groups.

In 2026, your website is still the only piece of "digital real estate" that you actually own and control, and it works 24/7.

- You set the rules.
- You show you’re a professional, established business.
- Customers can get in touch without getting distracted.
- You're not at the mercy of the Meta gods.

A good website doesn't just look nice; it builds trust and makes it easy for people to pick up the phone.

Not sure if your current site is pulling its weight? Or maybe you’re still relying on a page that’s gone a bit quiet?

Ever sent a quote and then... silence?

It is one of the most frustrating parts of running a small business. You don't want to be the "nagging" person, but you also do not want to let a good job slip away.

The truth is, most customers aren't ignoring you on purpose. They are just as busy as you are. They saw your quote, meant to reply, and then life got in the way.

The trick is a simple follow-up process that feels helpful, not pushy.

Our favourite is the "Magic Message." After a couple of unanswered check-ins, send this:

"Since I haven't heard back, I'll assume priorities have shifted. I'll close this file for now, but feel free to reach out if things change."

It's low-pressure and professional. It closes the loop for you, and more often than not, it triggers a "Wait, sorry, I still want to do this!" reply from the customer.

For local trades, what actually matters is the phone ringing. That’s why we’re big fans of Google Verified ads, aka Local Services Ads.

Unlike standard ads, where you pay every time someone clicks a link, with Google Verified, you only pay when an actual lead gets in touch.

You also get that green tick of trust next to your business name. It shows customers you’re the real deal before they even pick up the phone.

We know you’re busy enough as it is, so we handle the whole account and campaign setup to keep things simple.
