The Role of Consultants in Business
Consultants sometimes get an odd reputation.

Depending on who you ask, we’re either seen as people who arrive with a slide deck and leave before the real work starts… or as the quiet sounding board behind some of the most important decisions a business makes.

In reality, good consultancy usually sits somewhere much more practical than either of those stereotypes.

Most businesses reach moments where they simply need another perspective. Not because anything has gone wrong, but because the next stage of growth, change or challenge benefits from someone looking at it with fresh eyes.

That external viewpoint can be surprisingly valuable.

When you work inside an organisation every day, it’s easy to become very close to the detail. Processes evolve gradually, habits form, assumptions build up over time. An experienced outsider can often step back and ask questions that feel obvious in hindsight but haven’t been voiced for a while.

Sometimes the value is strategic.
Sometimes it’s simply having space for an honest conversation.

More and more organisations are also exploring retained or fractional roles, where someone joins the leadership picture for a small amount of time each month. Not as an employee, but as a trusted advisor who understands the business well enough to challenge thinking and support decisions when it matters.

It’s a model that works surprisingly well. Businesses gain experience and perspective, but keep the flexibility to scale support up or down as circumstances change.

Over the years I’ve worked with businesses at very different stages, from owner-led companies finding their next step through to organisations navigating strategic decisions at board level. What links them all is the same underlying need: space to think clearly and the confidence that comes from having thoughtful challenge around the table.

If you’re ever curious about what external advisory support might look like in practice, I’m always happy to have a conversation.

The Reality of Running a Business

One of the funny things about running a business is how easy it can look from the outside.

People often imagine flexible hours, working when you choose, perhaps the occasional coffee in the sunshine because you’re “your own boss”.

And while there are moments like that, the reality is usually much more complex.

Running a business means carrying decisions that don’t switch off at the end of the day. It means thinking about strategy, finances, clients, opportunities and risks — often all at once. It means being the person who needs to stay calm and positive even when things feel uncertain.

It can also be unexpectedly lonely.

When you’re the one responsible for the direction of a business, there isn’t always someone sitting next to you who understands the full picture. Conversations about challenges can feel difficult to have, because you don’t want to worry a team or concern clients.

Having spent the last 11 years running businesses, I’ve come to understand that this is far more common than people realise.

Business ownership can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be demanding, stressful and occasionally overwhelming.

What often makes the biggest difference is simply having someone you can talk things through with. Someone who understands the journey and can help bring perspective when everything starts to feel a little heavy.

That kind of conversation can change how decisions feel.

And sometimes that’s all it takes to move forward again.

People often say running your own business must be wonderful.

“You can take a day off whenever you want.”
“You’re your own boss.”
“You must have so much freedom.”

And I always smile at that.

Because anyone who has actually run a business knows the reality is a little different.

Yes, technically I could decide tomorrow to take the day off, watch the cricket and go for a long walk along the beach. The diary is mine to control after all.

But the truth is that business ownership rarely works that way.

There are clients to support, projects to deliver, conversations to prepare for, strategy to think through and opportunities to follow up. Decisions don’t stop just because the sun comes out or a good match is on.

Running a business brings a huge amount of satisfaction and freedom in many ways, but it also comes with responsibility that sits quietly in the background every day.

After 11 years of running businesses, I’ve learned that many business owners experience the same thing. The independence is real, but so are the pressures, the questions and the moments where it would be helpful just to talk things through with someone who understands.

In many ways, that journey is exactly what led me into the work I do now.

Supporting business owners, leadership teams and boards isn’t about stepping in and telling people what to do. It’s about offering perspective, challenge and experience so that decisions feel clearer and less isolating.

Sometimes that conversation unlocks strategy.
Sometimes it builds confidence.
Sometimes it simply reminds someone that they are not navigating things alone.

And every now and then, with the right plan in place, someone might even feel comfortable enough to take that day off and enjoy the cricket.

If you ever feel like a conversation might help bring clarity to your next step, I’m always happy to talk.

04/03/2026

I’m really pleased to share that my Chartered Marketer status with the Chartered Institute of Marketing has been renewed for another year following a CPD audit.

Only a small percentage of submissions are selected for audit each year, so it was reassuring to have the work reviewed and approved.

Qualifications are not the be all and end all in business. Experience, judgement and actually doing the work matter enormously. But professional standards matter too, and continuing to learn matters even more.

For me, maintaining Chartered status is about showing the pride I take in my work and the commitment I have to doing things properly. It is also about demonstrating to clients that the advice, mentoring and strategic support I give is grounded not just in experience, but in ongoing professional development.

This is also just one of a number of professional qualifications and accreditations I have built up over the years. None of them define the work on their own, but together they represent something important: dedication to the craft, a commitment to standards and a belief that learning should never really stop.

In fact, as of today I am officially 50 years and 1 day old, which feels like a pretty good moment to double down on that idea. New decade, new skills, new ideas and new perspectives.

So I am already on the lookout for the next things to learn. New courses, new programmes, new areas of knowledge and maybe even something completely outside my usual comfort zone.

If you have come across any brilliant courses, programmes or learning opportunities recently, I would genuinely love to hear about them.

After all, the best consultants and advisors are the ones who never stop being students themselves.

There is something incredibly powerful about sitting across from another business owner and simply talking.

No slides.
No sales pitch.
No performance.

Just real conversation.

In a world full of digital noise, algorithms and automated messages, I’m constantly reminded that growth still happens person to person. It happens over coffee, in networking rooms, on phone calls that were meant to be “quick catch-ups” but turn into something much more valuable.

Networking isn’t about collecting contacts.
It’s about gathering insight.

It’s about listening to what other business owners are really experiencing — cash flow pressures, recruitment struggles, scaling questions, confidence dips, board challenges. The unfiltered reality.

Those conversations sharpen your thinking. They reveal patterns. They challenge assumptions. They create collaboration where competition might have been expected.

Information gathering through human conversation is still one of the most underrated strategic tools in business.

When you talk to enough people, you start to see where markets are shifting. Where confidence is growing. Where risk is rising. You hear the mood before it shows up in the data.

And perhaps most importantly — you’re reminded you’re not alone.

Some of the most productive shifts I’ve seen in businesses have started with a simple conversation that unlocked a new perspective.

So if you’ve been hesitating to step into a room, pick up the phone, or reconnect with someone in your network — this is your nudge.

Talk. Listen. Ask better questions. Share honestly.

Business is still human at its core.

And if you ever want a thoughtful conversation about where you’re heading next, I’m always open to one.

Today seems like the perfect excuse to formally recognise a key member of the Justelle team.

For , I’d like to introduce Holly — our Office Dog and unofficial Head of Staff Wellbeing and Motivation.

Her responsibilities include:

• Ensuring regular screen breaks
• Monitoring stress levels (particularly around deadlines)
• Encouraging fresh air and walking meetings
• Providing silent support during strategic thinking sessions
• Appearing exactly when morale needs a lift

In all seriousness, having Holly around the office is more than just lovely company. She’s a gentle reminder of balance.

When work feels intense, she nudges for a pause.
When ideas feel stuck, a short walk often unlocks them.
When the day feels heavy, she lightens it — instantly.

There’s something grounding about animals. They don’t care about emails, frameworks, procurement routes or growth plans. They care about presence.

And that’s a good lesson for any business owner.

We talk a lot about productivity, strategy and performance — but wellbeing underpins all of it. Whether that’s time with family, time outdoors, or a four-legged colleague who insists on perspective.

So today, Holly is being recognised for her ongoing contribution to staff morale and office culture.

If you have a pet who makes your working life better, I’d love to see them in the comments.

Here’s to balance, perspective and the quiet support systems that keep us going.

The weather might not have got the memo… but over here at Justelle, things are definitely looking sunny.

January (and let’s be honest, early February too) can feel grey. Dark mornings. Head-down work. Lots of behind-the-scenes planning. The kind of weeks where you’re rewriting documents, refining programmes and mapping out the year before anyone sees the results.

But lately, something has shifted.

We’ve had some fantastic enquiries for short courses, consultancy projects and coaching support. The kind of conversations that remind you why you do what you do. Business owners wanting to grow with confidence. Leaders wanting clarity. Organisations looking for strategic direction rather than quick fixes.

And what’s been especially energising is the collaboration.

I’ve always believed that Justelle was never really a “solo” business. Yes, I may be the visible face, but the reality is far more connected than that. Across Somerset and beyond, there’s an extended network of brilliant professionals — associates, partners, collaborators, clients — who make up a much bigger picture.

It feels less like working alone and more like being part of an evolving, extended team across the region. Different skills. Different strengths. Shared ambition.

That’s when things start to feel exciting.

New short courses are taking shape. Consultancy conversations are opening doors. Coaching clients are setting bold plans for 2026. And the energy is building.

So yes, the skies might be a little unpredictable at the moment — but professionally, it feels bright.

If you’re thinking about growth this year, exploring collaboration, or simply want to sense-check an idea, I’m always happy to have a conversation.

Here’s to making 2026 feel lighter, clearer and full of possibility.
