The date is set for our next Netwalk, hosted by ourselves and with our guests being FG Wealth Advisory

📍 Wednesday 1st July.
🕤 9:30am start. (the emoji actually shows the correct time!).

We'll be walking the Knavesmire circuit (approximately 2 miles) before stopping off for tea/coffee and delicious scones at the Delta Hotels by Marriott York.

If networking in a more relaxed (and hopefully sunny) setting sounds appealing, this is definitely for you. Step away from the desk, enjoy a walk around the Knavesmire, bring the dog along if you’d like, and connect with people in a friendly, informal environment!

This has proven to be a very popular event, so if you'd like to come along to this one, don't hang around! To register, please book on Eventbrite

We look forward to seeing you and your four-legged friends on the 1st July! 🐾

We've lost count of the number of business owners who've come to us saying some version of:

"I thought creating a logo would be the easy bit..."

The problem isn't a lack of creativity. It's that most people start with the visual decisions before they've built the foundations.

Without a clear brand strategy, every font, colour palette and logo style feels like it could work. Which means you're left second-guessing every decision and disappearing down Pinterest rabbit holes at midnight.

But when you've done the work to define your brand personality, values, audience and positioning, the design process becomes so much simpler.

You're no longer choosing from ENDLESS possibilities.

You're choosing the options that genuinely fit the business you're building.

It's one of the reasons we spend so much time on strategy before we ever open Illustrator.

Because good branding isn't just about making things look nice.

It's about making the right choices, for the right reasons.

Have you ever fallen into the font-selection black hole? 👀

It's easy as a husband and wife team working in your small business, to become a little insular.

You get your head down. Focus on client work. Work through the never-ending to-do list. Before you know it, months have passed and you've barely stepped outside your own little bubble.

This year, Jen and I decided to change that.

We made a conscious effort to become more involved in York's fantastic business community. Not because we had to, but because we genuinely wanted to build more connections, support other local businesses, and spend time with people doing brilliant things across the city.

And this month alone has been a reminder of why that was such a good decision.

We've attended several networking events, celebrated York's incredible sporting talent at the YO1 Radio Sports Awards, enjoyed the launch of the wonderful KILA Creative Studios, and we're now busy organising our very own Netwalking event with RH Mortgages on 1st July.

What we've discovered is that business doesn't have to be all pitches, handshakes and swapping business cards. Some of the best conversations happen over coffee, during a walk, or while cheering on the achievements of others.

York really does have an amazing business community. Full of talented, generous and inspiring people who are willing to support one another.

If, like us, you've found yourself tucked away behind your screen a little too much, perhaps this is your sign to say yes to that event invitation, introduce yourself to someone new, or simply get out and be part of what's happening around you.

You never know where a conversation might lead.

Here's to making more connections, supporting local businesses, and continuing to be a bigger part of this brilliant city we call home.

Business confession time. And yes, this one still makes us both cringe.

Early on, trying to make an impact amongst hundreds of others doing what we do, we were absolutely convinced that advertising = eyeballs = clients.

Simple maths, right?

So we did what any sensible business owner would do.
We advertised in a football programme.
Then on screens at a golf club.

Anywhere that came with an impressive-sounding number attached. "Thousands of people will see this." Reader, thousands of people DID NOT CARE.

Not one enquiry. Not one lead. Not even a mildly curious person who got slightly lost on the internet and stumbled across us by accident.

For a while we convinced ourselves the advert just wasn't good enough. Wrong font, maybe. Needed a better tagline. Perhaps if we'd used a slightly better image.

Nope. The problem was simpler and more embarrassing than that.

The people seeing it just... weren't our people.

We'd been so dazzled by the size of the audience we never stopped to ask whether our actual audience was in it.

Turns out 100 of the right people will always beat 10,000 of the wrong ones.
A lesson we apparently needed to learn the expensive way.

It's exactly why audience targeting matters so much more than reach. Visibility is only useful if the right people are doing the seeing.
Anyway. That's my expensive education.

Now you go. 👇
What's the most "what was I thinking" money you've ever spent on your business? No judgement here. Genuinely.

What's one thing you think makes a business look instantly more expensive?
No wrong answers.

✨ Photography
✨ Branding
✨ Packaging
✨ Website

For me, it's the website.

Not because it needs all the bells and whistles.

But because your website is often where people go when they're seriously considering working with you.

And within seconds they're making decisions.
Do I trust this business?
Do they feel established?
Do they understand what I need?
Are they worth the investment?

A strategic website answers all of those questions before you've even spoken to a potential client.

The funny thing is, a beautifully designed website doesn't necessarily feel expensive.
A clear website does.

One that knows exactly who it's speaking to, what it's offering and why it matters.
That's what creates confidence.

And confidence is what feels premium.

But that's just me.

What's your answer?

Your clients aren’t booking because your website looks expensive.

They’re not booking because you’ve got a giant logo in the top corner.

Or because your homepage says you’ve drunk 4,372 cups of coffee.

Or because your site talks about your “passion” for helping people.

Or because you’ve filled it with stock photos while hiding your own face.

Or because it looks like you have a team of ten when it’s actually just you, your laptop and a strong cup of Yorkshire Tea.

They’re choosing you because your website makes it easy to trust you.

Because it’s clear.

Because they instantly understand what you do, who you help and why you’re different.

Because they instantly understand what you do, who you help and why you’re different.Because your words sound like a real person wrote them.

Because your website answers their questions before they have to ask them.

Because it feels credible, helpful and easy to buy from.

The websites that convert aren't usually the ones trying hardest to impress.

They’re the ones creating connection.

The ones built on strategy, not decoration.

The ones that showcase expertise instead of hiding behind clever design trends.

The ones that make people think:

"Yep. This is exactly who I've been looking for."

A beautiful website is a bonus.

A website that builds trust, creates clarity and turns visitors into enquiries?

That’s what actually grows a business, and what we create best.

When Kukuna approached us, they already had an exceptional product and a deep understanding of their audience.

What they didn't have was a brand identity capable of competing in the premium performance eyewear market.

They needed more than just a logo.

They needed a brand that would instantly connect with adventure-seekers, athletes and outdoor enthusiasts while positioning their products as a premium choice in a crowded market.

So we started with strategy.

Through competitor analysis, market research and brand discovery sessions, we uncovered a valuable opportunity: there was growing demand for high-performance eyewear made from sustainable materials, yet very few brands were owning that space.

That insight became the foundation of the entire brand.

Together, we developed:

✓ A distinctive logo system with multiple variations

✓ A vibrant colour palette inspired by outdoor adventure and sporting culture

✓ A typography suite designed for clarity and confidence

✓ A visual identity that reflected Kukuna's values of performance, adventure and environmental responsibility

The result?

A brand that stands apart from traditional sports eyewear companies while resonating with surfers, snowboarders, skaters and mountain bikers who value both performance and sustainability.

Most importantly, Kukuna launched with a strategic brand identity that gave customers confidence in the quality and credibility of the business from day one.

As Stuart Baldwin, Founder of Kukuna, put it:

"Mint Sauce Media didn't just design a logo. They helped bring the Kukuna brand to life. Bold, sharp and unforgettable, just like our eyewear."

This project is a perfect example of why we always start with strategy before design.

Because great branding isn't about looking good.

It's about creating a position in the market that only your brand can own.

After 30 years as a graphic designer specialising in brand and web design, you'd think there wouldn't be many surprises left.

And yet...

Some things still catch me off guard.

Like how often brilliant businesses hide behind average websites.

How many people think they have a design problem when what they really have is a clarity problem.

How quickly a business can outgrow its brand without even noticing.

And how the loudest businesses in the room aren't always the most talented.

The longer I do this work, the more convinced I become that great branding isn't really about looking good.

It's about being understood.

It's about making it easy for the right people to recognise your value, trust your expertise and choose you with confidence.

Because no matter how experienced, qualified or talented you are, if your brand isn't communicating that effectively, you're making life much harder than it needs to be.

I'm curious...

Which of these surprises resonates most with you?

Most people think a lead magnet is just a “freebie”.

A checklist.
A guide.
A PDF someone downloads and forgets about five minutes later.

But the good ones? They do something much more important.

They build trust before the sales conversation even begins.

Because if someone lands on your website and gives you their email address, they’re essentially saying:
“Okay… I’m interested. Tell me more.”

And that’s a big deal.

Your website shouldn’t just sit there looking pretty. It should be doing some of the heavy lifting for your business:
• Bringing in the right people
• Showing your expertise
• Building trust
• Starting conversations
• Nurturing potential clients while you’re off doing literally anything else

That’s where lead magnets come in.

The mistake most people make is creating something broad and fluffy that attracts everyone and converts no one.

The best lead magnets are specific.

They solve one small but meaningful problem.
They give people a quick win.
And they naturally lead towards your paid offer.

A strong lead magnet says:
“I understand exactly where you are right now… and I can help.”

That’s why email lists still matter so much.

Social media visibility comes and goes.
Algorithms change.
Reach drops.

But your email list?
That’s yours.

And if your website is strategically set up to grow that list consistently, it stops being an online brochure and starts becoming a marketing machine.

Even a simple:

• Homepage checklist
• Brand audit
• Website copy guide
• Pricing calculator
• Template
• Mini training

…can completely change how your audience engages with you when it’s done well.

The goal isn’t just more subscribers.

It’s building an audience of people who already trust you before they ever enquire.

What lead magnet are you offering on your website?
