COOKING IN THE DARK
Talking in the Dark × Dot & Type

Thank you to The Big Manx Feast for giving us the opportunity to showcase accessibility in the kitchen!

Myself and Evie worked together for years in a kitchen whilst doing Evie's food technology GCSE. We had so much fun and we cannot wait to share all of the gadgets and knowledge with you of how Evie navigates the cooking-world as a young blind woman.

All I need to remember is that people are watching and I need to be more professional than I would usually be in our own little school setting 🤣

We are on Saturday 19th September at 10.30 in the 'Cookery Theatre'. Don't miss out because we are only doing the one demonstration! 🧡

IT'S DOT & TYPE'S 1ST BIRTHDAY!

Which also means it's Zoid's 1st birthday, too. For anyone who doesn't know, Zoid is Dot & Type's little mascot. He is seen pictured here, and you will have seen him with all different expressions and in all different colours too!

Now the serious stuff...

For my first year running my own business, it has been an absolute rollercoaster. With so many highs but the lowest of lows, too. Business was hard to juggle with a huge bereavement in our family, not 4 months in. But I was forever grateful for running my own business because it meant I could be flexible and be there for my family, which was the most important thing for me.

The fun stuff...

I have made a cultural exhibition completely accessible for the blind and low vision community, made business menus accessible and I have travelled to the UK for a fantastic accessible events photoshoot plus many more lovely things.

I have produced many braille 'occasions' cards, and it warms my heart to know that someone is able to read their card independently, as a braille user. You really take those finer details for granted on a special occasion.

The important stuff...

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU to every single one of my customers and clients that I have worked with in my first year. Every single one of you has made this world that little bit more inclusive.

Here's to many more years of celebrating inclusion and accessibility with Dot & Type 🧡

My manifesto in different formats ♿

I want everyone to be able to read what I stand for.

I have made an Easy Read version of my manifesto.

Easy Read uses:

- Short sentences
- Simple words
- Clear headings
- A clear layout
- Pictures to help explain information

Easy Read can help people with learning disabilities.

It can also help people who find written information difficult to understand.

A very interesting listen! Everyone has the right to vote, but not all can access it...

Efforts are continuing to make voting at next month’s General Election accessible to everyone. ❎

The Crown and Elections Team is hoping the process will be improved when the Island goes to the polls on 24 September. ✔️

Last week, when Mark Kemp & his team asked for braille and large print copies of his manifesto, I was over the moon! Kemp4Rushen

I recently spoke on Manx Radio with Talking in the dark podcast - Evie Roberts, talking about accessibility for the blind and low vision community when it comes to elections and voting, and we spoke about manifestos being an issue.

Everyone deserves the equal opportunity to vote so access to print text is super important. Many manifestos get posted through the door without an awareness if someone can actually access the text.

That's why is is extremely important for all candidates to offer this service and Dot & Type is here to help! 🧡
