South African opposition leader Julius Malema has been found guilty of hate speech for comments at a 2022 rally, with the equality court ruling his words incited harm. His Economic Freedom Fighters Party says the remarks were taken out of context. Malema, previously tried for chanting “shoot the boer,” has long faced criticism for inflammatory rhetoric, including support for Hamas, which saw him denied UK visas. The case gained global attention after Donald Trump used a video of Malema to accuse South Africa of targeting white farmers. The court has yet to decide on his punishment.

In a statement issued on Monday, the rebel coalition Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), which includes the M23 armed group, stated that the truce will begin on Tuesday "in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the Kinshasa regime," referring to the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The DRC and much of the international community accuse neighboring Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels. It is unknown whether the Congolese army will agree to the ceasefire. Previous efforts, including truce agreements, failed to end hostilities.

Nearly 300 Romanian mercenaries who were enlisted to fight alongside the army in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have had a humiliating week. The aspirations of others who joined the job in hopes of making a lot of money have also been dashed by their capitulation during a rebel attack on the eastern city of Goma. According to contracts reviewed by the BBC, these hired troops were receiving almost $5,000 (£4,000) each month, whilst regular military recruits receive about $100 or occasionally receive no compensation. The Romanians were hired to support the army in its conflict with the M23 rebels, who are sponsored by Rwanda and claim to be defending the rights of the Tutsi minority in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
