“I’m marrying him because he’s a good man.”
“I’m marrying her because she’s a good woman.”
But pause for a moment… what exactly do we mean by “good”?
Someone can be hardworking, generous, prayerful, attractive, honest, kind and even deeply committed to their faith and still lack the emotional and relational skills needed to build a healthy marriage.
Can they communicate?
Can they forgive?
Can they handle conflict without destroying the relationship?
Can they offer emotional intimacy and vulnerability?
Can they understand, respect and respond to their partner’s needs?
Being a good person is important, but being a good person DOES NOT automatically make someone a good spouse!!!
Before you say “he’s a good man” or “she’s a good woman,” look beyond the qualities that impress you. Look at their capacity to love, connect, communicate, repair, forgive and build with you.
Marriage requires more than good character. It requires relational capacity.
Choose wisely. ❤️
