This is why I almost became a beggar 4 years ago.
One hot Saturday afternoon in the middle of 2019, hunger sat me down
It was after I took a drastic decision to put away a chunk of my salary so that I can pay for a Digital marketing course I plan to purchase the following year 2020
Here is what happened
I worked for a facility management company in Lekki where I earn 60k per month
Good pay for a young guy who has little responsibility to take care of, I usually don't worry about things to spend on
And even though I had a girlfriend, she doesn't depend on me at all...
After I had come in contact with Dr. Stephen Akintayo in 2017, I've had a strong desire to venture into Digital marketing, and 2019 was the year I decided to prepare for it
So I went into "Saving mode"
20k goes into savings for Digital Marketing
10k goes into my standard saving reservoirs
Left with 30k, Transportation, Feeding, Casual maintenance like Internet Data, and emergency expenses
Understanding fully well, the expenses attached to living in Lagos
How will Omo-boy use 30k to sustain himself through the month now became a question ChatGPT cannot answer
But I had faith and high hopes that it is going to pay off in the long run
So I cut down food consumption, outing frequency, calls I picked from friends...
It was one boring, painful but rewarding process, even though I skipped some months, chop the money, and look for ways to replace it later in the year
But in the end, I was able to sacrifice instant gratifications for long-term rewards
Even in the face of begging friends and family, I was still desperate to set that money apart so I can purchase the ticket to my next exploit...
By March 2020, I single-handedly paid N200k for a Diploma in Digital Marketing at a top Digital Marketing Institute (DMSI Lagos) and still have enough savings to take care of other things.
This is what you should understand
Humanity is hardwired with instant gratification, the love of getting a reward instantly
It is not as if there is no will for long-suffering, but pleasure is a strong force that controls the life of Millions today, both young and adult
There is nothing wrong in wanting to get things promptly
But caution should be applied not to forgo Opportunity at the expense of immediate pleasure
It's important to balance our desires with a realistic sense of timing and patience. By itself, though, instant gratification isn't a negative thing.
Most people are culprits these days, especially Gen. Z, who so much love to indulge and do not like to wait
You hear that Affiliate Marketing pays, and you jumped on it
They told you about Freelancing, you also want to be there
You heard course creators are cashing out, you quickly changed your Bio to follow suit...
Pause for a moment, think long-term, and ask yourself
What do I want in 5years that I have to commit all of my time, energy, and resources to achieve?
That is exactly what you should focus on and act towards.
