President John Dramani Mahama has responded to growing criticism of his government over the arrest of persons who use social media, particularly TikTok, to insult persons in authority.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 25, President Mahama said while he personally is not bothered by insults, Ghana as a country must collectively decide how to regulate new media without trampling on free expression.

“There’s a new media called TikTok and it’s not only Ghana where people are wondering what to do to regulate TikTok because in all countries all over the world they are wondering what to do to make sure that we have information integrity even with TikTok,” President Mahama said.

He decried the nature of the platform where anyone with a phone can publish anything and the algorithm amplifies it.

GOAL KEEPER K!LLERS ARRESTED

Two key suspects allegedly linked to the kidnapping and murder of Senegalese goal keeper Cheikh Toure in Kumasi, have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

According to reports, two persons who claim to be brothers of the deceased sent him to the Manhyia Hospital with several abdominal injuries, alleging that the victim had been involved in an accident. The victim was, however pronounced dead on arrival, and the suspects then deposited his body at the Ebenezer Mortuary at Tafo, Kumasi and absconded.

The suspects are, 32-year-old Salifu Walid, a Nigerien, and 24-year-old Aziz Wadrago Mane, a Burkinabe. They were arrested at their hideout at Banpanase near Mamponteng in the Ashanti Region.

Preliminary investigations revealed, that the two suspects are members of a four member group suspected to have masterminded the kidnapping and murder of the goal keeper. They reportedly pose as football scout agents and use online networks to lure unsuspecting victims into the country.

The suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime during interrogation, and provided information on their respective roles in luring the deceased into the country as part of an alleged scheme to defraud him.

Efforts have been intensified to arrest suspects Noukoubri Arzouma Sylvian also known as Prince Pierre and Barry, who are believed to have played a central role in the group’s activities.

The two are currently in Police custody, and will be processed for court.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has maintained the charges for electricity and water tariffs for the fourth quarter of 2026, with the existing third-quarter rates remaining unchanged.

The unchanged tariffs will take effect from October 1, 2026, following the commission’s quarterly review of utility tariffs to account for developments in key economic and operational factors.

The review considered the Ghana cedi-US dollar exchange rate, inflation, the cost of natural gas and the electricity generation mix, with the cedi depreciating by 3.04 per cent while the weighted average cost of gas declined by 1.67 per cent.

New cedi notes will be more durable, but handle them with care – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has called on Ghanaians, businesses, and financial institutions to handle banknotes properly to preserve their quality and reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency.

The call comes as the central bank prepares to introduce its upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, on November 3, 2026.

The Head of Currency at the Bank of Ghana, Dominic Owusu, on Eyewitness News on September 24, 2026, said the new notes would be more durable than the existing banknotes, but stressed that improved durability should not encourage careless handling.

“Even though these banknotes are going to be more durable, I would always encourage Ghanaians to mind their handling,” he said.

According to him, keeping banknotes clean and in good condition would help the Bank of Ghana maintain fit currency in circulation while reducing the frequency and cost of replacing worn-out notes.

“Once we keep the banknotes clean, it will also reduce the printing cost so that we are able to ensure that we have fair, clean banknotes in circulation,” he said.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, also appealed to the public, traders, businesses and financial institutions to treat the cedi with care, describing the preservation of banknotes as a shared responsibility.

He urged the public to desist from crumpling, writing on or stapling banknotes, as well as using them for decorative purposes such as money bouquets, spraying and banknotes. It will reduce replacement cost for the central bank, and it will support efficient currency management,” Dr Asiama said.
